How to write numbers in words
- Hyphenate 21 to 99: twenty-one, forty-five, ninety-nine. Numbers like twenty, thirty and one hundred have no hyphen.
- No “and” in American English: 105 is “one hundred five”. British English says “one hundred and five”. Tick British “and” for that style.
- No commas between groups: 2,500 is “two thousand five hundred”, not “two thousand, five hundred”.
- Scale words stay singular: “three million”, never “three millions”.
- Decimals: read each digit after the point — 3.14 is “three point one four”.

How to write a check amount in words
On a check, write the dollars in words and the cents as a fraction of 100, then draw a line to the end of the field so nothing can be added. Most checks print “Dollars” at the end of the line, so you don't write it yourself.
| Amount | Written on the check |
|---|---|
| $25.00 | Twenty-Five and 00/100 |
| $150.75 | One Hundred Fifty and 75/100 |
| $1,234.56 | One Thousand Two Hundred Thirty-Four and 56/100 |
| $10,000.00 | Ten Thousand and 00/100 |
Even amounts still get a fraction: $10,000.00 is “Ten Thousand and 00/100”. Amounts are rounded to the nearest cent, so $19.999 becomes “Twenty and 00/100”. The Currency row gives the spoken version — “one thousand two hundred thirty-four dollars and fifty-six cents” — for invoices, contracts and legal documents.
Ordinal numbers in words
Ordinals describe position. Most add “-th”, words ending in “y” change to “-ieth”, and a few are irregular:
| Number | Ordinal |
|---|---|
| 1 | first |
| 2 | second |
| 3 | third |
| 12 | twelfth |
| 21 | twenty-first |
| 100 | one hundredth |
Names of large numbers
English uses the short scale, where each new name is 1,000 times the previous one:
| Name | Value | Power of 10 |
|---|---|---|
| Thousand | 1,000 | 10³ |
| Million | 1,000,000 | 10⁶ |
| Billion | 1,000,000,000 | 10⁹ |
| Trillion | 1 followed by 12 zeros | 10¹² |
| Quadrillion | 15 zeros | 10¹⁵ |
| Quintillion | 18 zeros | 10¹⁸ |
| Sextillion | 21 zeros | 10²¹ |
| Decillion | 33 zeros | 10³³ |
| Vigintillion | 63 zeros | 10⁶³ |
Some European languages use the long scale, where a “billion” is a million million (10¹²). Modern English — US and UK — uses the short scale, so one billion is 1,000,000,000. This converter supports numbers up to the vigintillions (66 digits) exactly, with no rounding.
Number to words in Excel, Python and JavaScript
Excel has no built-in function. Microsoft documents a SpellNumber VBA macro you can add to a workbook, or you can
paste values here. Python has the num2words package:
from num2words import num2words
num2words(1234) # 'one thousand, two hundred and thirty-four'
num2words(21, to='ordinal') # 'twenty-first'
Note that num2words defaults to British style with “and” and commas. JavaScript has no native equivalent;
Intl.NumberFormat formats digits but doesn't spell numbers out, so you need a library or a small function.
