How to read USD to EUR
USD to EUR is the number of EUR (Euro) that 1 USD (US Dollar) buys. The opposite direction is EUR to USD.
The European Central Bank publishes its reference rates as an amount of each currency per 1 euro, so USD to EUR is the reciprocal of the published figure for USD: 1 divided by that rate. The rate for this pair is 1 ÷ (USD per EUR).
Who converts USD to EUR
The dollar to euro pair links two of the biggest currency areas in the world, so it is one of the most converted pairs. Tourists from the United States visiting Europe, companies invoicing across the Atlantic, people shopping on European websites and investors with holdings in both currencies all need it. Because the ECB quotes its reference rates against the euro, no third currency is involved: the figure is the reciprocal of the published euro to dollar rate.
Facts about this pair
- USD is ISO 4217 code 840 and EUR is code 978; the three letter codes are what the converter and the ECB use to tell currencies apart.
- Both currencies are written with 2 decimal places in ISO 4217, so a result in EUR is rounded to 2 decimal places.
- The reverse pair is the reciprocal: the EUR to USD rate is 1 divided by the USD to EUR rate, apart from rounding.

Getting a fair rate on USD to EUR
If you travel in the euro area, withdrawing local cash with a debit card that has no foreign transaction fee is often cheaper than exchanging notes at an airport booth. Whatever method you use, divide the amount you receive by the amount you paid to find the rate you actually got, and compare it with the reference rate here.
If you will spend over a longer trip, split your money between a card with low foreign fees and a small amount of cash for places that do not take cards. Check the rate on this page near the time you convert, because it can differ from the figure you saw weeks earlier. Card acceptance varies between countries and shops in the euro area, so it is sensible to carry a little cash as well.
The euro area has many member states, and each prints its own design on the coins, but all euro coins and notes are valid everywhere in the area. A euro price in one country means the same currency as in another.
Where the rate comes from
The rate loads in your browser from Frankfurter, which republishes European Central Bank reference rates. They are published on working days for information only, and a bank is not obliged to deal at them. If the service cannot be reached the page shows no number, except a rate saved in your browser within six hours, marked as cached. How the rates work is explained on the currency pairs page. Nothing here is financial advice.
FAQ
What does USD to EUR mean?
It is the value of one US dollar expressed in euros. A quote of USD to EUR tells you how many euros you receive for 1 dollar, so you multiply a dollar amount by the rate to get euros.
Why is the EUR rate on this page different from Google or my app?
Different sources use different data and update times. This page uses the daily ECB reference rate, while many apps show live market quotes that move all day. Small differences are normal.
How often is the USD to EUR reference rate updated?
Once per working day, at around 16:00 Central European Time. The page shows the date of the rate it used so you can see how fresh it is.
Are the cash exchange rates the same as the reference rate?
No. Cash exchange desks quote a buy rate and a sell rate with a spread around the mid-market figure, so you receive fewer euros than the reference rate suggests.
