Mulch Calculator: Volume, Bags and Cost Estimate

Enter the length, width and depth of your area to find out how many cubic yards or bags of mulch you need. You can also enter a unit price to get a total cost estimate. This mulch calculator runs entirely in your browser, so nothing is uploaded anywhere.

How to use the mulch calculator

  1. Enter the length and width of the area in feet.
  2. Set the depth of mulch in inches (2 to 4 inches is standard).
  3. Choose your preferred bag size if buying bags instead of bulk.
  4. Check the waste box to add 10% extra for settling and spillage.
  5. Optionally enter a unit price to see the estimated total cost.

How the mulch volume is calculated

The formula converts all measurements to feet, then divides by 27 to get cubic yards. One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet.

Volume (yd³) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (in) / 12 / 27

For example, a bed that is 10 feet long, 10 feet wide and 3 inches deep holds 10 × 10 × 3 / 12 / 27 = 0.93 cubic yards of mulch. If you check the 10% waste option, the mulch calculator multiplies that result by 1.1, giving about 1.02 cubic yards.

To find the number of bags, the tool first computes the raw cubic feet (Length × Width × Depth / 12), applies the waste factor if selected, and then divides by the bag size (2 or 3 cubic feet), rounding up to the next whole bag.

Using the mulch cost calculator

Bulk mulch is typically sold by the cubic yard, while bagged mulch is sold in 2 or 3 cubic foot bags. Prices vary widely by region and material type: hardwood bark, cedar, pine straw and rubber mulch all carry different price tags.

To use this tool as a mulch cost calculator, enter the price per cubic yard or the price per bag in the optional field. The calculator will multiply the required units by that price. For instance, if you need 1.02 cubic yards and bulk mulch costs $40 per yard, the estimated total is $40.80.

Remember that bulk deliveries often include a flat delivery fee not captured here. Bagged mulch avoids delivery charges but usually costs more per cubic foot than bulk. Compare both options using the rows above before deciding.

Why add 10% for waste and compaction

Mulch settles after installation. Loose wood chips compress under their own weight and after rain, reducing the effective depth. Spillage during transport from the driveway to the garden bed also accounts for lost material.

Adding 10% ensures you do not run short halfway through the job. For bulk delivery, check the supplier's minimum order and rounding. For bagged purchases, the mulch bags calculator already rounds up to whole bags, which naturally adds a small buffer. The waste checkbox adds the 10% to the volume before the bag count is rounded up, so you can turn the extra margin off if you want the bare minimum.

FAQ

How many square feet does a cubic yard of mulch cover?

At a depth of 3 inches, one cubic yard covers approximately 108 square feet. At 2 inches it covers about 162 square feet, and at 4 inches it covers roughly 81 square feet.

How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?

One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. That means you need 13.5 two-cubic-foot bags (so you would buy 14) or exactly nine 3-cubic-foot bags to make one cubic yard.

Should I remove old mulch before adding new mulch?

You usually do not need to remove old mulch unless it is matted, moldy or harboring pests. Rake the existing layer to loosen it, measure its depth, and add only enough new mulch to reach your target thickness.

Does this mulch calculator work for rubber mulch or pine straw?

Yes. The math for volume is the same regardless of material. However, pine straw is often sold by the bale rather than by volume, so you would need to convert bales to coverage separately.

Is the 10% waste factor always necessary?

It is recommended for most projects because mulch settles and some is lost during spreading. For very small, precise areas where you spread carefully, you can uncheck the waste option.

Can I use this as a mulch cost calculator for comparing bulk vs bags?

Absolutely. Run the calculation once with the bulk price per cubic yard and again with the bag price per bag. Compare the two totals to see which purchasing method is cheaper for your project size.
