How to use the pounds to ounces converter

  1. Select whether you are converting pounds to ounces or ounces to pounds using the dropdown.
  2. Type the weight amount into the number field.
  3. Read the result immediately below in three formats: total ounces, decimal pounds, and a mixed pounds-and-ounces breakdown.

How the conversion works

The avoirdupois system defines exactly 16 ounces in one pound. To convert pounds to ounces, multiply by 16. To go from ounces to pounds, divide by 16.

For example, 3.25 pounds times 16 equals 52 total ounces. The mixed format takes the whole number of pounds (3) and multiplies the remaining fraction (0.25) by 16 to get 4 ounces, giving 3 lb 4 oz.

When converting ounces to pounds, 42 ounces divided by 16 gives 2.625 pounds. The integer part is 2 pounds, and the remainder is 42 minus (2 times 16), which is 10 ounces. So 42 oz equals 2 lb 10 oz.

Why use the mixed format

Decimal pounds are precise but not always practical. When reading a kitchen scale, shipping a package, or following a recipe, people usually think in whole pounds and leftover ounces rather than fractions of a pound.

Saying "2 lb 8 oz" is easier to measure on a traditional scale than saying "2.5 lb". Postal services and grocery stores in the United States still display weights in this mixed format, making it essential for everyday tasks like mailing letters or buying produce.

Avoirdupois versus troy ounces

This converter uses the avoirdupois system, where 1 pound equals 16 ounces. This is the standard for cooking, shipping, body weight, and general commerce in the US and UK.

The troy system, used exclusively for precious metals like gold and silver, has 12 troy ounces in a troy pound. A troy ounce is also heavier than an avoirdupois ounce (about 31.1 grams versus 28.35 grams). If you need to convert precious metal weights, do not use this lbs to oz tool. For metric equivalents of avoirdupois ounces, see the ounces to grams converter.

Handling fractional ounces

When the input produces a fractional ounce, the mixed format rounds to four decimal places to keep the display readable while preserving accuracy. For instance, 1.1 pounds converts to 17.6 total ounces, displayed as 1 lb 1.6 oz.

If you need higher precision for scientific or engineering work, rely on the total ounces row, which preserves up to 12 significant digits before rounding away floating point noise. The decimal pounds row likewise maintains full precision for further calculations.

FAQ

How many ounces are in a pound?

There are exactly 16 avoirdupois ounces in one pound. This is the standard used for food, shipping, and body weight in the United States.

How do I convert ounces to pounds?

Divide the number of ounces by 16. For example, 48 ounces divided by 16 equals 3 pounds.

What does the mixed format mean?

The mixed format splits a weight into whole pounds and the remaining ounces. For example, 2.5 pounds becomes 2 lb 8 oz because the 0.5 pound fraction equals 8 ounces.

Is this the same as troy ounces?

No. Troy ounces are used only for precious metals, and there are 12 troy ounces in a troy pound. This tool uses the standard avoirdupois system of 16 ounces per pound.

Can I convert decimal pounds to ounces?

Yes. Enter any decimal value in pounds mode. For example, 0.75 lb converts to 12 oz, or 0 lb 12 oz in the mixed format.

Does this tool upload my data?

No. All conversions happen locally in your browser. Nothing is sent to any server.
