Weighted Grade Calculator: Compute Your Class Grade

A weighted grade calculator multiplies each assignment score by its category weight, sums those products, and divides by the total weight to produce your overall class grade. Enter your scores and weights below to see the result immediately. All math runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded anywhere.

How to use the weighted grade calculator

  1. Enter each category score as a percentage in the Score fields.
  2. Enter the corresponding category weight as a percentage in the Weight fields.
  3. Leave any unused rows blank if you have fewer than five categories.
  4. Read your overall weighted grade and letter grade in the results area.

How the weighted grade formula works

A weighted grade is not a simple mean of your scores. Each score is multiplied by its weight, those products are summed, and the total is divided by the sum of all weights. The formula is:

Grade = (S1 x W1 + S2 x W2 + ... + Sn x Wn) / (W1 + W2 + ... + Wn)

For example, suppose you scored 92 on exams worth 40 percent, 85 on homework worth 30 percent, and 78 on a project worth 20 percent. The calculation is (92 x 40 + 85 x 30 + 78 x 20) / (40 + 30 + 20) = (3680 + 2550 + 1560) / 90 = 7790 / 90 = 86.56%. If you add a participation score of 95 worth 10 percent, the denominator becomes 100 and the numerator gains 950, giving 8740 / 100 = 87.40%.

Common grading scale reference

This grade calculator uses the standard ten-level scale common at many US high schools and universities. Your institution may use plus/minus variations or different cutoffs, so always check your syllabus.

When weights do not add up to 100

Syllabi sometimes list weights that total more or less than 100 percent due to rounding, extra credit categories, or dropped assignments. This weighted grade calculator handles that automatically by dividing the weighted sum by the actual total of the weights you entered rather than assuming they equal 100.

If your instructor drops the lowest quiz score, remove that quiz from the input entirely and redistribute its weight among the remaining quizzes, or enter only the kept scores with their original weights. The tool will normalize them correctly either way.

Converting point-based grades to percentages

If your assignments are graded in points rather than percentages, convert each one first. Divide the points earned by the points possible, then multiply by 100. For instance, earning 42 out of 50 points gives 42 / 50 x 100 = 84%. Enter that 84 as the score in this class grade calculator along with the category weight from your syllabus.

Do not mix raw points and percentages in the same row. Every score field expects a value between 0 and 100 representing a percentage.

Planning ahead with a target grade

Students often want to know what score they need on a final exam to reach a specific overall grade. While this page computes your current standing, you can rearrange the formula to solve for an unknown score. If you need help figuring out exactly what to score on your last assignment to pass or earn an A, the final grade calculator is built for that scenario.

To estimate your cumulative performance across multiple semesters rather than within a single course, use the GPA calculator instead. It converts letter grades into quality points and averages them by credit hours.

FAQ

What is a weighted grade calculator?

It is a tool that computes your overall class grade when different assignments or categories count for different portions of the total. Instead of treating every score equally, it applies the percentage weight your syllabus assigns to each category.

Why does my weighted average differ from a simple average?

A simple average treats every score as equally important. A weighted average gives more influence to categories with higher weights, such as exams worth 50 percent versus homework worth 10 percent.

Can I use this if my weights add up to more than 100?

Yes. The calculator divides the sum of weighted scores by the actual total of the weights you entered, so the result stays accurate even if the weights exceed or fall short of 100.

How do I enter scores graded in points instead of percentages?

Convert each score to a percentage first by dividing points earned by points possible and multiplying by 100. Then enter that percentage in the score field.

Is my data sent to a server?

No. All calculations happen locally in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded or stored.

What letter grade scale does this use?

It uses the common US ten-level scale where 93 and above is an A, 90 to 92.99 is an A-, down through F below 63. Check your own syllabus because institutions vary.

How is this different from a final grade calculator?

This tool finds your current overall grade from completed work. A final grade calculator works backward to tell you what score you need on a remaining exam to hit a target grade.
