Ratio Calculator: Simplify Ratios and Solve Proportions

Enter two numbers to simplify a ratio, or fill in three values of a proportion to solve for the missing one. This ratio calculator works as both a ratio simplifier and a proportion calculator, running entirely in your browser without uploading any data.

Choose which position is unknown.

How to use the ratio calculator

  1. Select Simplify a ratio or Solve for x from the Mode dropdown.
  2. For simplifying, enter values for A and B. The tool divides both by their greatest common divisor.
  3. For solving a proportion, enter the three known values and choose whether you need x or C.
  4. Read the result instantly below the inputs. Adjust any number to recalculate.

How the ratio simplifier works

To simplify a ratio, the calculator finds the greatest common divisor (GCD) of the two numbers and divides each by it. For example, to simplify 12:8, the GCD of 12 and 8 is 4. Dividing both sides gives 12 / 4 = 3 and 8 / 4 = 2, so the simplified ratio is 3:2.

When you enter decimals like 0.5:1.5, the tool first multiplies both numbers by a power of 10 to make them whole (here, multiplying by 10 gives 5:15), then applies the same GCD process to arrive at 1:3.

Solving proportions step by step

A proportion states that two ratios are equal: A : B = C : D. Written as fractions, this means A / B = C / D. Cross-multiplying gives A * D = B * C.

If you need to find D (labeled x in the tool), rearrange to D = (B * C) / A. For instance, in 3:4 = 9:x, the calculation is (4 * 9) / 3 = 12. If you need C instead, use C = (A * D) / B. The proportion calculator handles both cases automatically.

The only invalid input is when the denominator in the rearranged formula is zero, because division by zero has no defined result.

Practical uses for ratios

Ratios appear across many fields. In cooking, a recipe might call for flour and water in a 5:3 ratio. If you have 750 grams of flour, you can solve the proportion 5:3 = 750:x to find you need 450 grams of water.

In finance, debt-to-equity ratios help assess risk. In design, aspect ratios determine how content fits on screens. You may also encounter ratios when working with related tools such as the aspect ratio calculator for display dimensions, or the fraction calculator when converting between fractional and ratio notation.

Handling edge cases and negative numbers

A ratio like -6:-9 simplifies to 2:3 because dividing two negatives yields a positive. However, a ratio with mixed signs such as 6:-9 simplifies to -2:3. The sign is preserved on the first term by convention.

Zero is valid in one position: 0:5 simplifies to 0:1. But 0:0 is undefined because any number divided by zero is meaningless. When using the tool to solve a proportion, if the known value that becomes the divisor is zero, the calculator returns an error rather than producing infinity or NaN.

FAQ

What is a ratio?

A ratio compares two quantities by division. Writing 3:2 means the first quantity is 1.5 times the second.

How do I simplify a ratio?

Find the greatest common divisor of both numbers, then divide each by that value. For 12:8, the GCD is 4, giving 3:2.

How does the proportion calculator solve for x?

It cross-multiplies the equation A/B = C/x to get x = (B * C) / A, then computes the result.

Can I use decimals in this ratio calculator?

Yes. Decimals are scaled to whole numbers internally before simplification, so 0.5:1.5 correctly simplifies to 1:3.

Is a ratio the same as a fraction?

They are closely related. The ratio 3:4 corresponds to the fraction 3/4, but ratios can also compare parts to parts rather than parts to a whole.

Why do I get an error when solving a proportion?

An error occurs when the calculation requires dividing by zero, which happens if the corresponding known value in the proportion is zero.
