Choosing the Right Tool

Start by identifying whether your task involves describing a dataset or making an inference about a population. For descriptive work, use the Average Calculator to find the arithmetic mean, then pair it with the Standard Deviation Calculator or Variance Calculator to quantify spread. Variance is expressed in squared units of your original data, while standard deviation returns to the original units, making it easier to interpret alongside the mean.

For inferential tasks, select your test based on data type and sample size. Use the T-Test Calculator when comparing means from small samples (typically under 30) where the population variance is unknown. Switch to the Z-Score Calculator when working with large samples or known population parameters. The Chi-Square Calculator is reserved for categorical frequency data, not continuous measurements.

Distributions, Relationships, and Combinatorics

Probability models require specific inputs. The Binomial Distribution Calculator needs three values: the number of trials (n), the probability of success per trial (p), and the target number of successes (k). It computes results using the formula P(X = k) = C(n,k) * p^k * (1-p)^(n-k). If you only need the combination term C(n,k), use the Combination Calculator directly.

To measure relationships between two continuous variables, start with the Correlation Coefficient Calculator, which outputs Pearson's r on a scale from -1 to 1. A strong correlation does not imply causation. If you need to predict one variable from another, use the Linear Regression Calculator to generate the slope and intercept for the equation y = mx + b. For general event likelihoods, the Probability Calculator handles unions, intersections, and complements.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

A frequent error is applying a z-test to small samples drawn from non-normal populations. The central limit theorem justifies normal approximations only when sample sizes are sufficiently large. Another mistake is confusing sample standard deviation with population standard deviation. Sample calculations divide by n-1 (Bessel's correction), while population calculations divide by n. Using the wrong denominator inflates or deflates your result.

When computing confidence intervals, ensure you match the critical value to the correct distribution. Rounding intermediate steps introduces compounding errors. Keep full precision during calculation and round only the final output. Most tools here display four to six decimal places by default, which is adequate for academic and professional reporting.

Privacy and Accuracy

Every tool in this category executes entirely within your browser using JavaScript. No data is uploaded to any server, and no network requests carry your inputs. Your datasets remain local to your machine at all times. This architecture also means calculations depend on IEEE 754 double-precision floating-point arithmetic, which provides approximately 15 to 17 significant decimal digits of accuracy. For virtually all practical statistical applications, this precision is indistinguishable from exact computation.
