Invisible Text and Blank Characters

Copy an invisible character with one click for a blank name, an empty message or extra spacing. Every character is listed with its Unicode code point and an honest note on where it works. Below the gallery, generate longer blank text or find and remove hidden characters in text you pasted.

Each button copies exactly one character. The box between the bars shows how much space it takes.

Hangul Filler
U+3164 takes up space

Good for: Blank names and nicknames, empty-looking messages, blank bio lines.

Where it works: The classic choice for blank names in games and chat apps. It is a letter, so many name fields accept it, but some platforms now block or strip it.

Braille Pattern Blank
U+2800 takes up space

Good for: Blank messages, spacing and empty lines in bios and posts.

Where it works: Takes the width of a character and is rarely trimmed, so it often works where spaces are collapsed. May be stripped in some name fields.

Zero Width Space
U+200B zero width

Good for: Allowing a line break inside a long word or URL, separating characters without a visible gap.

Where it works: Widely supported in browsers and editors, but many sites trim it from names and it may be removed when text is sanitised.

Zero Width Non-Joiner
U+200C zero width

Good for: Stopping letters from joining in Persian, Arabic and Indic scripts, and breaking ligatures (fi, ff).

Where it works: A legitimate character in many languages, so it is usually preserved. Name fields may still reject it on its own.

Zero Width Joiner
U+200D zero width

Good for: Gluing emoji into sequences (family, profession and flag emoji) and joining letters in some scripts.

Where it works: Preserved almost everywhere because emoji depend on it. On its own it shows nothing.

Word Joiner
U+2060 zero width

Good for: Preventing a line break between two characters, or stopping a word from being auto-linked or mentioned.

Where it works: Supported by modern browsers and fonts. May be stripped by some apps and older software.

No-Break Space
U+00A0 takes up space

Good for: Keeping words together on one line (10 kg, Mr Smith), indenting text where normal spaces collapse.

Where it works: Works almost everywhere, but it looks like a normal space, so many platforms treat it as one and may trim it from names.

Em Space
U+2003 takes up space

Good for: A wide gap (one em) for indents, alignment and spacing out a bio.

Where it works: Displays in most fonts. Some platforms collapse or trim it at the start and end of text.

Figure Space
U+2007 takes up space

Good for: Aligning numbers in columns: it is exactly as wide as a digit and does not allow a line break.

Where it works: Works in most fonts. May be trimmed at the start or end of a field.

Zero Width No-Break Space (BOM)
U+FEFF zero width

Good for: Marking the start of a UTF-8 or UTF-16 file (byte order mark). Mostly something to find and remove, not to add.

Where it works: Often stripped automatically, and stray BOMs break CSV headers, JSON and scripts. Prefer the word joiner inside text.

Detect and remove invisible characters

Paste text copied from a website, a PDF or a chat. Hidden characters are highlighted and listed, and one click removes them.

Use it responsibly: blank names and spacing are fine, but do not use invisible characters to impersonate someone, dodge word filters or evade moderation. Most platforms treat that as a rules violation.

    How to copy invisible text

    1. Pick a character from the gallery. If you are not sure, start with the Hangul Filler (U+3164) for names, or the Braille Pattern Blank (U+2800) for messages.
    2. Press Copy. Exactly one character is now on your clipboard, even though you cannot see it.
    3. Paste it into the name field, message box or bio. If the app says the field is empty or strips it, try the next character on the list.
    4. For a longer blank message or a wide gap, use the Blank text generator: choose a character, set how many (1 to 1,000) and copy.

    What is invisible text?

Invisible text is not hidden formatting or white-on-white text. It is made of real Unicode characters that have no visible shape. Some take up space like a letter (blank characters such as the Hangul filler and braille blank). Others have zero width and exist to control how text behaves: where a line may break, whether two letters join, or how emoji combine. Because they are ordinary characters, they survive copy and paste, which is why they work in places where you cannot type a normal blank.

Many apps reject a name made only of normal spaces, because spaces are trimmed from the start and end of a field. Invisible characters get around that because the app sees a character that is not a space. Apps that want to stop blank names add the common ones to a block list, which is why support changes over time and between platforms.

Which invisible character should I use?

    • Blank names and nicknames: the Hangul Filler is the traditional choice because it is classed as a letter, so validation rules that require "a letter" accept it. Some games and apps have since blocked it; the braille blank is the usual fallback.
    • Empty messages and blank lines in bios: the Braille Pattern Blank takes up a full character width and is rarely trimmed, so it keeps line breaks and spacing that apps would otherwise collapse.
    • Extra spacing and indents: the em space gives a wide gap, the figure space matches the width of a digit, and the no-break space keeps two words together on one line.
    • Line-break control in your own content: a zero width space marks where a long URL or word may wrap; a word joiner stops a break and can also stop a word from being turned into a link or mention.
    • Language and emoji: the ZWNJ and ZWJ are essential in Persian, Arabic and Indic scripts and in emoji sequences. They are best left to the keyboard rather than pasted by hand.

    Detecting and removing hidden characters

Invisible characters cause real bugs. A zero width space copied from a web page breaks a password, a search or a spreadsheet lookup that "looks" identical. A byte order mark (U+FEFF) at the start of a CSV file renames the first column. No-break spaces from Word or a PDF stop code from compiling and make two strings that look equal compare as different.

Paste suspicious text into the detector above. Each hidden character is shown as a small labelled box with its code point, and the list underneath counts them by type. Remove them deletes zero-width and filler characters and turns space-like ones (no-break, em, thin and other special spaces) into ordinary spaces so words do not run together. The detector also catches direction marks, soft hyphens and invisible tag characters, which are sometimes used to smuggle hidden text into prompts and messages.

    Use invisible characters responsibly

Blank names, tidy bios and cleaner spacing are harmless. Using invisible characters to impersonate another user (for example a name that looks identical to someone else's), to slip banned words past a filter, or to evade moderation and bans breaks the rules of almost every platform and can get an account suspended. Screen readers may also read some of these characters aloud or skip content, so avoid them in text that needs to be accessible.

    FAQ

How do I make a blank name?

Copy the Hangul Filler (U+3164) and paste it into the name field. If it is rejected, try the Braille Pattern Blank (U+2800), or several characters in a row from the generator, since some apps require a minimum length.

Can I send an empty message on WhatsApp, Discord or Instagram?

Usually yes, with the Braille Pattern Blank or the Hangul Filler. Apps change their rules, so a character that works today may be trimmed tomorrow; the gallery notes which ones are most often stripped.

What is the zero width space used for?

It marks an allowed line-break point without showing a space, which is useful for long URLs and words in narrow layouts. It is also the most common accidental hidden character in copied text.

Why did my invisible character disappear after pasting?

Many apps trim or sanitise text, removing zero width characters and special spaces from names and the start or end of messages. Try a character that takes up space, such as U+3164 or U+2800, or put it between visible characters.

How do I find invisible characters in text?

Paste the text into the detector on this page. It highlights every hidden character, names it and gives its code point, and the Remove button cleans them out in one step.
