Pace Calculator for Runners

Enter any two of pace, total time and distance to calculate the missing value. This running pace calculator works in minutes per mile or minutes per kilometer and runs entirely in your browser so nothing is uploaded. Use it as a race time predictor before your next event.

  • Total time
    1:45:00
  • Distance
    13.1 mi

How to use the pace calculator

  1. Select what you want to find: pace, time or distance.
  2. Choose your unit: miles or kilometers.
  3. Fill in the two known values using the hours, minutes and seconds fields or the distance and pace fields.
  4. The result updates automatically as you type.

How the running pace formula works

The core relationship between pace, time and distance is straightforward. Pace equals total time divided by total distance. If you run 13.1 miles in 1 hour and 45 minutes, first convert the time to seconds: 1 x 3600 + 45 x 60 = 6300 seconds. Then divide by the distance: 6300 / 13.1 = 480.92 seconds per mile. Converting back gives 8 minutes and 1 second per mile, written as 8:01 min/mi.

To predict a finish time, multiply the pace in seconds by the distance. To find how far you can run in a given window, divide the total time in seconds by the pace in seconds per unit. This pace calculator handles all three directions automatically.

Common race distances and reference paces

Use this table to estimate finish times at popular paces. Distances are approximate standard race lengths.

RaceDistancePace 7:00 min/miPace 9:00 min/miPace 10:00 min/mi
5K3.1 mi21:4227:5431:00
10K6.2 mi43:2455:481:02:00
Half marathon13.1 mi1:31:421:57:542:11:00
Marathon26.2 mi3:03:243:55:484:22:00

These figures assume a steady effort from start to finish. In practice, most runners use a race time predictor that accounts for slight slowdowns in later miles, but constant-pace math is the standard starting point for training plans.

Minutes per mile vs minutes per kilometer

Running communities in the United States typically measure pace in minutes per mile, while most other countries use minutes per kilometer. Because one mile equals 1.609344 kilometers, a 8:00 min/mi pace is roughly 4:58 min/km. To convert manually, multiply minutes per mile by 0.621371 to get minutes per kilometer, or multiply minutes per kilometer by 1.609344 to get minutes per mile.

This pace calculator lets you switch units with one click so you never have to do that arithmetic yourself. When you change the unit dropdown, remember that the distance field now expects the new unit. Entering 5 when set to miles means 5 miles, not 5 kilometers.

Using this tool as a race time predictor

A common way to set a race goal is to run a shorter time trial and project the result. Select Time mode, enter your target pace from a recent workout and the full race distance, and the calculator returns your projected finish time. For example, if you hold 6:30 min/km comfortably for 5K, entering 6 minutes 30 seconds and 42.195 km gives a marathon projection of about 4:34:16.

Keep in mind that projecting over long distances assumes consistent fitness and fueling. A 5K effort does not scale linearly to a marathon because glycogen depletion and muscular fatigue change the equation. Still, the raw math from this running pace calculator provides a useful baseline for pacing strategy.

Common mistakes to avoid

The most frequent error is mixing up units. Entering a 10K distance while the unit selector is on miles will give a pace that is far too fast. Always verify the unit dropdown matches the number you typed.

Another pitfall is leaving the pace seconds field blank when you mean zero. A pace of 8 minutes and no seconds entered may be treated as incomplete input. Enter 0 explicitly in the seconds field to indicate an even minute pace like 8:00.

Finally, remember that total time fields accept hours, minutes and seconds separately. Do not type 90 into the minutes field expecting it to roll over; instead enter 1 hour and 30 minutes. The calculator sums the three fields into total seconds internally.

FAQ

What is a pace calculator?

A pace calculator determines one missing running variable when you provide the other two. Give it your total time and distance to find your pace, or give it pace and distance to predict your finish time.

How do I calculate minutes per mile?

Divide your total running time in seconds by the number of miles you ran. Convert the resulting seconds back into minutes and seconds. For instance, 3000 seconds over 3.1 miles is about 968 seconds per mile, or 16:08 min/mi.

Can I use this as a race time predictor?

Yes. Switch the mode to Time, enter your expected pace and the race distance, and the tool returns your projected finish time. It works for any distance from a 5K to an ultramarathon.

What is the difference between pace and speed?

Speed measures distance per unit of time, such as miles per hour. Pace measures time per unit of distance, such as minutes per mile. Runners prefer pace because it maps directly to split times on a watch.

Does this running pace calculator work for walking?

Absolutely. The math is identical whether you are running, walking or cycling. Just enter your typical pace and distance to see how long the activity will take.

Why does my pace look wrong after switching units?

When you switch from miles to kilometers, the distance field still holds the number you typed. If you entered 5 meaning five miles, you need to change it to 8.05 for the equivalent in kilometers, or re-enter your actual metric distance.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. All calculations happen locally in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server.
