How to use the gradebook calculator
- Paste your grade data into the first text area. Use the header row
Student,Assignment,Earned,Possible,Category. The category column is optional. - Add category weights in the second text area if you want weighted averages. Format:
Category,Weight(weights can be decimals like 0.4 or percentages like 40). - Check or uncheck Use category weights to toggle between weighted and simple points‑ratio calculation.
- The table below updates instantly showing each student's final percentage and the class summary statistics.
How the gradebook calculator works
The tool parses the CSV you provide. For each student it groups rows by category (or treats all rows as a single category if no category column is present). It sums earned points and possible points per category.
If Use category weights is enabled and you supplied a weight table, the student's final percentage is a weighted average: for each category pct = earned / possible, then final = sum(weight * pct) / sum(weight) across categories that have a weight. Categories without a positive weight are left out of the weighted average, and a note lists them under the results. If the checkbox is off, the final percentage is simply total earned / total possible across all rows.
Class statistics are computed from the list of final percentages: mean (average), median (middle value after sorting), minimum and maximum. Percentages are shown with two decimal places.
Reference table of common weight setups
Typical category weight configurations used by teachers:
| Category | Weight (decimal) | Weight (percent) |
|---|---|---|
| Quizzes | 0.2 | 20% |
| Homework | 0.3 | 30% |
| Midterm | 0.25 | 25% |
| Final | 0.25 | 25% |
Adjust the numbers to match your syllabus. The weights do not need to sum to 1; the calculator normalises them automatically.
Practical use cases
Quick end‑of‑term grading: Export your LMS grade export as CSV, paste it here, and get a ready‑to‑report class average without opening a spreadsheet.
Weight experiments: Toggle the weight checkbox and change the weight table to see how different weighting schemes affect each student's final grade.
Spot‑check a single student: Filter the CSV to one student before pasting; the tool will still compute class stats (which will match that student).
Common mistakes and edge cases
Missing category column: If you omit the Category column, the calculator treats every row as the same category. Weighted mode will then have only one category, so the weight has no effect.
Zero possible points: Rows where Possible is 0 are ignored to avoid division by zero.
Weights not matching categories: Categories present in the grade data but absent from the weight table are excluded from the weighted average. Categories in the weight table but missing for a student are ignored for that student.
Non‑numeric values: Rows where Earned or Possible is not a number, Earned is negative or Possible is 0 or less are skipped, and a note shows how many were skipped. Names with commas must be wrapped in double quotes.
Why run it in the browser
All parsing and calculation happen locally. No data is sent to a server, so student scores stay private. The tool works offline after the page loads, and there are no accounts or limits.

FAQ
Can I import data directly from Excel?
Export the sheet as CSV (Comma Separated Values) and paste the text into the grade data area. The calculator expects a header row with the exact column names.
What happens if a student has no entries for a weighted category?
That category is omitted from the weighted average for that student. The remaining weights are renormalised so the calculation stays fair.
Does the tool support letter grades?
No. It works with numeric points only. Convert letter grades to points before pasting.
Can I save the results?
Copy the table output or use your browser's print to PDF feature. There is no server‑side storage.
Is there a limit on the number of rows?
The tool handles a few thousand rows comfortably. Very large data sets may slow down the browser.
How are percentages rounded?
Final percentages are rounded to two decimal places for display. Internal calculations keep full precision.
Can I use percentage weights like 20 instead of 0.2?
Yes. The parser accepts either decimals or whole numbers; they are normalised automatically.
