HS GPA Calculator for High School Students

This hs gpa calculator computes your high school grade point average from a list of courses, letter grades, credit hours and class levels. It supports both the standard 4.0 scale and an extended 4.3 scale where A+ earns extra points. Everything runs in your browser so no data is uploaded anywhere.

Format each line as: Course Name, Letter Grade, Credits, Level. Valid grades are A+ through F. Valid levels are regular, honors or ap.

An F earns no honors or AP bonus. Weighted GPA adds +0.5 for honors and +1.0 for AP to passing grades only.

How to use the hs gpa calculator

  1. Enter one course per line in the text area using the format Name, Grade, Credits, Level.
  2. Use letter grades from A+ to F and set the level to regular, honors or ap.
  3. Choose between the standard 4.0 scale or the 4.3 scale where A+ earns 4.3 base points.
  4. Read your unweighted GPA, weighted GPA, total credits and quality points below the input.

How the HS GPA Is Calculated

This hs gpa calculator multiplies each course's grade points by its credit hours to produce quality points, then divides the total quality points by the total credits.

The unweighted GPA uses the base grade value only. For example, an A in a 1-credit regular class produces 4.0 x 1 = 4.0 quality points. The weighted GPA adds bonus points before multiplying: +0.5 for honors and +1.0 for AP classes. So that same A in a 1-credit AP class produces (4.0 + 1.0) x 1 = 5.0 weighted points.

If you take two 1-credit classes, an A in AP Biology and a B in regular English, the math works out as follows. Unweighted quality points: 4.0 + 3.0 = 7.0, divided by 2 credits = 3.50 GPA. Weighted points: 5.0 + 3.0 = 8.0, divided by 2 credits = 4.00 weighted GPA.

One rule applies to the weighted GPA: a failing grade earns no bonus. An F in an honors or AP class still counts as 0.0, not 0.5 or 1.0, because the bonus rewards passing the harder course. Results are rounded to two decimals with exact ties rounded up, so a true 3.675 shows as 3.68.

Understanding Course Levels and Weights

High schools typically offer three tiers of coursework. Regular classes follow the standard curriculum and receive no additional weight. Honors classes cover material at a faster pace or greater depth, and most schools add 0.5 points to the base grade value. AP (Advanced Placement) classes follow a college-level syllabus set by the College Board, and schools generally add 1.0 point to the base grade.

When you use this high school gpa calculator, make sure the level you enter matches how your school actually weights the course. Some districts do not weight honors classes, while others may use different increments. Always check your school handbook if you are unsure. This tool adds the bonus only to passing grades (D- and above); an F gets no bonus.

Common Input Mistakes to Avoid

The most frequent errors when using a highschool gpa calculator come from formatting. Each line must have exactly four comma-separated fields. Missing commas, extra spaces inside the grade field, or misspelling the level will cause a validation error that reports the exact line number so you can fix it quickly.

Another common mistake is confusing the 4.0 and 4.3 scales. On the 4.0 scale, an A+ and an A both equal 4.0 base points. On the 4.3 scale, an A+ equals 4.3 while an A remains 4.0. Selecting the wrong scale changes your result without warning, so verify which one your school uses.

Finally, remember that credits must be positive numbers. Half-credit courses like physical education or semester-long electives should be entered as 0.5. Entering zero or a negative number will trigger an error.

Tracking Your Progress Over Time

This tool calculates the GPA for the specific courses you enter. If you need to combine multiple semesters or years into a single figure, use the cumulative GPA calculator to merge past and current terms. For students who want to isolate a single term, the semester GPA calculator handles that scenario directly.

If your school reports grades as percentages rather than letters, you can convert them first using the percentage to GPA tool, then enter the resulting letter grades here. Similarly, if you need to compare your result against a different scale, the GPA scale converter translates between systems.

FAQ

What is the difference between the 4.0 and 4.3 scales?

On the 4.0 scale, both A+ and A count as 4.0 base points. On the 4.3 scale, an A+ counts as 4.3 while an A remains 4.0. Check your school's policy to determine which scale applies.

How does weighting work for honors and AP classes?

Honors classes add 0.5 points to the base grade value, and AP classes add 1.0 point. For example, a B (3.0) in an AP class becomes 4.0 weighted points before multiplying by credits. A failing grade (F) earns no bonus, so an F stays at 0.0 even in an AP class.

Can I enter half-credit courses?

Yes. Enter the credit value as 0.5 for half-credit courses such as semester electives or physical education. The calculator handles fractional credits correctly.

What happens if I type a grade incorrectly?

The calculator validates every line and returns an error message with the specific line number that has the problem. Fix the grade, level or format on that line and the calculation will proceed.

Does this hs gpa calculator include all my past semesters?

It calculates the GPA for the courses you enter in the text area. To combine multiple terms into a running total, use the cumulative GPA calculator instead.

Is my data sent to a server?

No. All calculations happen locally in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded or stored anywhere.
