How to use the cumulative gpa calculator
- Select Calculate new cumulative GPA or Find GPA needed for a target from the mode dropdown.
- Enter your current cumulative GPA (0 to 4.0) and the total credits completed so far. Enter 0 in both fields if this is your first term; blank fields are not accepted.
- List this term's courses in the text area, one per line, as
grade, credits. Letter grades like A- or numeric values from 0 to 4.0 like 3.7 both work. - If you chose target mode, enter the target cumulative GPA you want to reach.
- Read the results below: your new overall GPA, term GPA and total credits, or the exact average you need this term.
How cumulative GPA is calculated
A cumulative GPA is a credit-weighted average of every grade you have earned. Each letter grade maps to a numeric value on the standard 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0), with plus adding 0.3 and minus subtracting 0.3. Multiply each grade value by its course credits to get quality points.
The formula for your new overall GPA is:
New GPA = (Old Quality Points + Term Quality Points) / Total Credits
For example, if you have a 3.0 GPA across 30 credits, you hold 90 quality points. Earning an A (4.0) in two 3-credit courses adds 24 quality points. Your new cumulative GPA becomes (90 + 24) / 36 = 3.1667.
Standard 4.0 grade scale reference
This cumulative GPA calculator uses the most common US 4.0 scale. If your school uses a different scale, convert your grades first using a GPA scale converter.
| Letter Grade | Grade Points |
|---|---|
| A+ | 4.0 (counted as 4.0 here) |
| A | 4.0 |
| A- | 3.7 |
| B+ | 3.3 |
| B | 3.0 |
| B- | 2.7 |
| C+ | 2.3 |
| C | 2.0 |
| C- | 1.7 |
| D+ | 1.3 |
| D | 1.0 |
| D- | 0.7 |
| F | 0.0 |
You can also type numeric values from 0 to 4.0 directly into the course list instead of letters. The current GPA and target GPA must also be between 0 and 4.0; anything higher is rejected, and blank fields are rejected instead of being treated as 0.
Finding the GPA needed to reach a target
When you switch to target mode, this overall GPA calculator works backward. It determines the term GPA required to pull your cumulative average up to your goal. The math rearranges the standard formula:
Required Term GPA = (Target GPA x Total Future Credits - Current Quality Points) / Term Credits
If the required term GPA exceeds 4.0, the tool tells you it is impossible to reach that target in a single term with those courses. If it is below 0, your current GPA already meets the target and the tool says so. You would need more credits or multiple terms to close a gap.
Common mistakes when computing overall GPA
A frequent error is averaging letter grades without weighting them by credits. A 4-credit course affects your cumulative GPA twice as much as a 2-credit course. Always multiply grade points by credits before summing.
Another mistake is mixing scales. This tool uses a strict 4.0 cap, with A+ counted as 4.0. If your previous GPA was computed on a scale where A+ counts as 4.3, convert it first or the result will be slightly off. Keep your scale consistent across all entries.
Finally, do not include pass/fail or audit courses in the calculation unless your institution assigns them grade points. Most schools exclude these from the cumulative GPA entirely.

FAQ
What is a cumulative GPA?
A cumulative GPA is the credit-weighted average of all grades earned across every term at an institution. It reflects your overall academic performance rather than a single semester.
Can I use numeric grades instead of letters?
Yes. In the courses text area, type the numeric grade point followed by a comma and the credits, such as 3.7, 3 for an A- worth three credits.
Why does the target mode say my goal is impossible?
If reaching your target cumulative GPA requires a term GPA higher than the maximum possible (4.0 on this tool), it cannot be done in one term with the listed credits. You would need to take more credits or spread the improvement over several terms.
Does this tool handle plus and minus grades?
Yes. It supports A+, A, A-, B+, B, B- and so on down to F. A+ is always treated as 4.0 on this tool, matching the standard 4.0 scale used by most universities.
Should I include transfer credits?
Include transfer credits only if your school factors them into your cumulative GPA. Many institutions accept transfer credits toward graduation but exclude them from the GPA calculation.
Is my data sent to a server?
No. This cumulative GPA calculator runs entirely in your browser. Your grades and credits are never uploaded anywhere.
