GPA to Percentage Converter

Enter your GPA on a 4.0 scale to see the approximate percentage range, midpoint, and letter grade. You can choose between a standard academic lookup table or a simple linear formula. This tool runs entirely in your browser, so nothing is uploaded anywhere.

Lookup uses common US grading bands. Linear is a rough proportional estimate.

How to use the gpa to percentage

  1. Enter your GPA on a standard 4.0 scale.
  2. Choose the conversion method: the standard lookup table or the linear formula.
  3. Read the resulting percentage range, midpoint, and letter grade instantly.
  4. Use the reference table below to verify other values manually.

How the lookup table works

The standard lookup method maps each GPA band to a fixed percentage range used by many US high schools and universities. For example, a GPA of 3.5 falls into the A- band, which corresponds to 90-92%. The midpoint of that range is 91%.

This approach reflects how grades are actually assigned: a student who scores 91% on every assignment earns an A-, which translates to a 3.7 GPA. Converting back from GPA to percent therefore returns a range rather than a single exact number, because multiple percentage scores map to the same grade point.

Every band includes its lower bound and runs up to the next band's lower bound. A GPA of 3.85 is an A, while 3.8499 is still an A-, so no value falls between two bands and every GPA from 0 to 4.0 gets a result.

The linear formula alternative

The linear method calculates the percentage as (GPA / 4.0) * 100. A 3.5 GPA becomes 87.5%, and a 2.0 GPA becomes 50%.

This formula is simple but often misleading. In most grading systems, 50% is not a C (2.0); it is a failing score. The linear method treats the scale as perfectly proportional starting from zero, which does not match how letter grades are distributed. Use it only when someone specifically requests a proportional conversion, and prefer the lookup table for realistic academic estimates.

Why converting GPA to percent is approximate

A GPA is an average of grade points, not a direct percentage. When you convert GPA to percent, you are reversing a lossy process. A student with a 3.0 GPA might have earned exactly 85% in every class, or they might have mixed 92% (A-) and 78% (C+) averages. Both scenarios produce the same GPA but different underlying percentages.

Because of this, any gpa to percentage conversion provides an estimate. The lookup table gives the most likely range based on standard grading policies. If your institution uses a different scale, such as a 10-point system or plus/minus variations with different cutoffs, the results will differ.

Common use cases

Students frequently need to convert GPA to percentage when applying to international universities, filling out scholarship forms, or comparing their academic record against systems that use percent-based thresholds. Many employers outside the United States also request percentage equivalents on job applications.

When submitting converted figures, always state which method you used. Providing both the lookup range and the linear result helps admissions officers or recruiters understand your standing regardless of their preferred scale. To go the other way, use the percentage to GPA converter. To compare against other scales, try the GPA scale converter, or work out an average with the GPA calculator. The percentage calculator helps with related math.

FAQ

What percentage is a 3.5 GPA?

Using the standard lookup table, a 3.5 GPA falls in the A- band, which corresponds to 90-92%. The midpoint is 91%. Using the linear formula, it would be 87.5%.

Is the linear formula accurate for GPA to percent conversion?

No. The linear formula (GPA divided by 4 times 100) assumes a proportional scale starting at zero, which does not match how letter grades work. A 2.0 GPA is typically a 73-76%, not 50%. The lookup table is more realistic.

What letter grade is a 2.7 GPA?

A 2.7 GPA corresponds to a B- letter grade, which maps to a percentage range of 80-82% on the standard lookup table.

Can I convert a weighted GPA above 4.0?

This tool only supports unweighted GPAs on a 4.0 scale. Weighted GPAs (such as 4.5 or 5.0) depend on your school's specific weighting policy and cannot be reliably converted with a universal table.

Do all universities use the same GPA to percentage scale?

No. While the lookup table used here is common across many US institutions, some universities use slightly different cutoffs. Always check your specific institution's grading policy if precision matters.

Does this tool upload my data?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser. Your GPA is never sent to any server.
