How to use the boat loan calculator
- Enter the boat price, your down payment and any trade-in value.
- Set the annual interest rate offered by your marine lender and choose a loan term up to 20 years.
- Add your local sales tax percentage and any documentation or dealer fees.
- Review the amount financed, estimated payment, total interest and total cost of the boat.
How the boat payment is calculated
The boat loan calculator uses the standard amortization formula. First it determines the total amount financed:
Financed = Price + (Price x Tax%) + Fees - Down Payment - Trade-in
Then it applies the monthly payment formula for an amortizing loan:
PMT = P x (r / (1 - (1 + r)^-n))
Where P is the amount financed, r is the monthly interest rate (annual rate divided by 12) and n is the total number of months. For example, financing $43,200 at 7.5% annual interest over 15 years (180 months) gives a monthly rate of 0.00625. The calculation yields a payment of roughly $400.47.
Typical marine loan terms and rates
Boat financing differs from other secured lending because vessels depreciate. Lenders set terms, rates and minimum down payments based on the loan size, the age and type of the vessel and your credit. These vary widely between lenders and over time, so this calculator does not assume any rate: enter the rate and term from your own lender quote.
As a rough guide, longer terms are usually offered on larger, newer boats, while older or smaller vessels often get shorter terms. Always compare written quotes from several lenders.
What to include in fees and taxes
When using this boat loan calculator, account for all upfront costs that will be rolled into the financing. Common additions include:
- Sales tax: this calculator applies your rate to the full purchase price. Some states tax only the price after the trade-in credit, so if that applies to you, lower the sales tax rate or check with your dealer.
- Documentation fees: charged by dealers for processing paperwork, which vary by dealer.
- Title and registration: state fees for titling the vesselwhich vary by state.
- Freight or delivery: if the boat must be shipped from the manufacturer or another dealer.
- Dealer preparation: cleaning, rigging and commissioning charges.
Adding these to the financed amount rather than paying them out of pocket increases both the principal and the total interest paid over the life of the loan.
Trade-in values and their effect
Trading in an old boat reduces the amount you need to finance. Dealers usually offer less than a private-party sale would bring, so compare both before you decide.
Enter the agreed trade-in amount in the calculator to see how it lowers your financed balance and overall cost. Note that this tool does not reduce the sales tax for a trade-in; some states do, so check your local rules.
Comparing boat financing options
Marine lenders, banks, credit unions and dealer-arranged financing all offer boat loans. Marine-specific lenders understand vessel depreciation and may offer longer terms for larger boats. Credit unions often provide lower rates for members.
If you are exploring other types of secured financing, tools like the auto loan calculator or RV loan calculator use similar math but reflect different depreciation curves and term limits. For unsecured borrowing, compare with a personal loan calculator. You can also model early payoff scenarios with a loan payoff calculator.

FAQ
How long can I finance a boat?
Terms vary by lender, boat age and loan size. Many marine loans run 5 to 20 years, and this calculator accepts 1 to 20 years.
What credit score do I need for a boat loan?
Requirements differ by lender. A higher credit score generally qualifies for lower rates and larger loan amounts, while a lower score usually means a higher rate or a bigger down payment. Ask lenders for a quote before you buy.
Is sales tax included in a boat loan?
Many lenders allow sales tax to be financed along with the boat. This boat loan calculator adds the tax rate you enter to the purchase price and includes it in the financed amount. Confirm with your lender.
Can I use a personal loan instead of a boat loan?
You can, but personal loans typically have shorter terms and higher rates than secured marine loans. Compare the numbers using a personal loan calculator before deciding.
Does a trade-in reduce the sales tax I owe?
In some states the trade-in value is deducted from the price before sales tax; in others it is not. This calculator applies tax to the full price and subtracts the trade-in afterwards, so adjust the tax rate if your state credits trade-ins.
Are boat loan interest rates higher than car loan rates?
Rates depend on the lender, the boat, the term and your credit, so compare quotes. Enter your quoted rate in this boat loan calculator to see what it means for your payment.
