How to use the indiana paycheck calculator

  1. Enter gross pay for one check and choose the frequency.
  2. Choose your county. Indiana counties charge their own income tax on top of the state tax.
  3. Enter exemptions from your WH-4: personal, dependent, first-time dependent and adopted child.
  4. Add 401(k) and health premiums per check.
  5. Read net pay, with state and county tax on separate lines.

Indiana withholds two income taxes

Indiana takes a state income tax of 2.95% and a county income tax at the rate of the county where you lived on January 1. Both are applied to the same wages after your exemptions. In Marion County (2.02%), a $2,800 biweekly check with a $140 401(k) deferral and one exemption withholds $77.34 of state tax and $52.96 of county tax, leaving $2,069.92 on this indiana paycheck calculator. For other states and custom percentages, see the general paycheck calculator.

How exemptions become a deduction per check

Departmental Notice #1 turns each yearly exemption into a fixed amount per pay period by dividing and rounding to cents. A personal exemption is $1,000 a year, an additional dependent exemption is $1,500, a first-time additional dependent exemption is another $1,500 and an adopted child exemption is $3,000. On a biweekly check, one personal exemption removes $38.46 before tax. The state and county percentages are then applied to what remains.

  • Personal exemptions: $1,000 each (WH-4 line 5, including the extra ones for age 65 or blindness).
  • Additional dependent exemptions: $1,500 each (line 6).
  • First-time additional dependent exemptions: $1,500 each (line 7), figured from Table B on its own, so the cents can differ by a penny from adding lines 6 and 7 together.
  • Adopted child exemptions: $3,000 each (line 8).

The county rate is the big variable

County rates in Indiana run from 0.50% (Porter) to 3.00% (Randolph), so the same salary can lose very different amounts. Moving the example check from Porter County to Hamilton County with two extra dependent exemptions changes the total Indiana tax from $90.45 to $99.94. County and state tax are both paid on the same exemption-reduced wages.

The county rates on this page are those in Indiana Department of Revenue Departmental Notice #1 (R47 / 10-26), effective Oct. 1, 2026. Boone County changed on that date, to 1.71%.

Which county applies

The rate follows the county of residence on January 1 of the tax year, not where you live today. If you lived outside Indiana on that date but your main place of work was in an Indiana county, that county applies. Moving in the middle of the year does not change the county rate until the next year. The notice also covers employees who work in Indiana 30 days or less; they may not be subject to withholding.

Method and sources

State rule and all 92 county rates: Indiana Department of Revenue Departmental Notice #1 (R47 / 10-26), effective Oct. 1, 2026, fetched 2026-11-04, including the department's own weekly worked example ($800 weekly, five personal exemptions, three additional dependent exemptions, one first-time additional dependent exemption, two adopted child exemptions, 0.01 county rate: $13.96 state and $4.73 county on $473.08). The notice says county rates change each January and October, so the table needs refreshing then. Federal income tax follows IRS Publication 15-T (2026), Worksheet 1A, annual percentage method. Social Security is 6.2% up to the $184,500 wage base and Medicare is 1.45% plus 0.9% over $200,000 of wages. Not modelled: bonus pay (the notice says one-time payments are withheld without exemptions), nonresident rules and other local taxes. This is a withholding estimate for one paycheck, not a payroll quote or tax advice. Your employer's payroll system and your final tax return decide the real figures. Constants to refresh: state rate (2.90% scheduled for 2027 by some reports, unconfirmed), county table (January and October), Social Security wage base.

FAQ

What is the Indiana state income tax withholding rate for 2026?

2.95%, applied to wages after exemptions. County income tax is added on top.

Which Indiana county rate applies to my paycheck?

The county where you lived on January 1 of the tax year, or the county of your main workplace if you lived out of state on that date.

How much is an Indiana WH-4 exemption worth?

$1,000 a year for each personal exemption, $1,500 for each additional dependent exemption (line 6), $1,500 for each first-time additional dependent exemption (line 7) and $3,000 for each adopted child exemption.

Do bonuses use the same method in Indiana?

The Department of Revenue says one-time or non-periodic payments such as bonuses are withheld without exemptions, so this regular-paycheck page does not apply to them.

Does Indiana have a state disability or paid leave deduction?

No state payroll premium is taken from employee pay. Income tax at state and county level is the Indiana withholding.

Why do my state and county amounts have cents that differ from a table?

Withholding is computed per check from the notice's exemption amounts, rounded to cents, rather than looked up in a bracket table.
