How to use the isbn barcode generator
- Enter your ISBN-10 or ISBN-13 number. Hyphens and spaces are stripped automatically.
- Optionally type a 5-digit add-on to encode the retail price (for example,
51995for $19.95). - Choose a white or transparent background for the SVG output.
- Click Generate to render the Bookland EAN-13 barcode and view the encoded values below it.
How ISBN converts to EAN-13
The publishing industry uses a subset of the EAN-13 symbology known as Bookland. To convert an ISBN-10 to an EAN-13 barcode, the tool prepends the 978 prefix, takes the first nine digits of the ISBN-10, and calculates a new EAN check digit. For example, the ISBN-10 0-306-40615-2 becomes the 12-digit sequence 978030640615.
The EAN-13 check digit is computed by summing the digits at odd positions multiplied by 1 and even positions multiplied by 3, then finding the number that brings the total to the next multiple of 10. For 978030640615: (9+8+3+6+0+1) + 3*(7+0+0+4+6+5) = 27 + 66 = 93. The check digit is 10 - (93 mod 10) = 7, giving the final EAN-13 9780306406157.
If you provide an ISBN-13 starting with 978 or 979, this isbn barcode generator validates its check digit directly and encodes it without modification.
The 5-digit price add-on
Books sold in North America often carry a supplemental 5-digit barcode to the right of the main symbol. This add-on encodes the suggested retail price so point-of-sale scanners can read it. The first digit indicates the currency: 5 for US dollars, 6 for Canadian dollars, 4 for New Zealand dollars, 3 for Australian dollars and 0 for British pounds. An add-on beginning with 9 (for example 90000) means no price is given.
The remaining four digits represent the price in cents. A price of $19.95 becomes 51995. If the price exceeds $99.99, publishers use 59999. The add-on uses its own parity pattern and start character, separated from the main barcode by a fixed guard space.
Common ISBN-13 prefixes
All Bookland barcodes begin with a GS1 prefix assigned to the publishing industry. Here are the two active prefixes:
| Prefix | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 978 | Active | Original Bookland prefix; most existing ISBNs use this. |
| 979 | Active | Introduced when 978 numbers began running out; not convertible back to ISBN-10. |
When the 978 pool is exhausted for a specific registration group, new ISBNs are issued under 979. An ISBN-13 starting with 979 cannot be converted back to a 10-digit format because the ISBN-10 system only supports the 978 prefix implicitly.
Barcode structure and dimensions
A standard EAN-13 barcode consists of 95 modules: a start guard (bar-space-bar), 42 data modules for the left half, a center guard (space-bar-space-bar-space), 42 data modules for the right half, and an end guard (bar-space-bar). The left-half digits use two different parity patterns (odd and even) determined by the first digit of the EAN-13 code, which is not drawn as a bar but encoded in the parity itself.
For printed books, the nominal magnification factor is typically between 80% and 200%. At 100% (X-dimension of 0.33 mm), the barcode is about 37.29 mm wide and 25.93 mm tall. When using this isbn barcode generator for cover design, export the SVG and scale it within these bounds to ensure scanner readability. Related formats like the EAN-13 barcode generator handle general retail items, while the ITF-14 barcode generator is used for outer cartons.
Validating ISBN check digits
Before generating the SVG, the tool verifies the mathematical integrity of the input. ISBN-10 uses a modulo 11 check where the last character can be a digit or X (representing 10). Each of the 10 digits is multiplied by its position weight (10 down to 1), and the sum must be divisible by 11.
ISBN-13 uses the same modulo 10 alternating-weight algorithm as EAN-13. If the provided check digit does not match the calculated one, the tool returns an error rather than producing an invalid barcode. This prevents misprints that would cause scanning failures at retail points.

FAQ
What is the difference between ISBN-10 and ISBN-13?
ISBN-10 is the older 10-digit format using a modulo 11 check digit. ISBN-13 is the current 13-digit format aligned with the EAN-13 standard, using a modulo 10 check digit. All new books since 2007 use ISBN-13.
Can I use this isbn barcode generator for self-published books?
Yes. As long as you have a valid ISBN assigned by your national agency or self-publishing platform, you can generate the required Bookland barcode here for your cover designer.
Why does my ISBN-13 start with 979 instead of 978?
The 978 prefix pool was running out of available numbers, so the GS1 organization introduced 979 for new registrations. Both prefixes are valid for Bookland barcodes.
Do I need the 5-digit add-on?
It depends on your market. North American retailers often expect the price add-on for scanning at checkout. In many other regions, the main EAN-13 symbol alone is sufficient.
Is the generated SVG suitable for print?
Yes. SVG is a vector format that scales without quality loss. Ensure your printer sets the X-dimension between 0.264 mm and 0.66 mm (80% to 200% magnification) for reliable scanning.
Does this tool upload my ISBN to a server?
No. The entire conversion and rendering process happens locally in your browser. Your ISBN and price data never leave your device.
