How to use the mm to meters converter
- Enter the length in the Length box. Zero and positive numbers, including decimals, are accepted.
- Choose Millimeters to Meters or Meters to Millimeters in the Convert menu.
- Read the two result rows. The first is your input, formatted, and the second is the converted value.
- Change the direction to check the reverse conversion of the same number.
Definition and sources
The SI prefix milli means 10-3, so 1 mm = 0.001 m by definition. This is set out in the BIPM SI Brochure (9th edition, 2019, with its 2022 update) and in NIST Special Publication 811 (Guide for the Use of the International System of Units, 2008 edition). The meter itself is the length light travels in vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second, a definition in force since 1983 and restated in the 2019 SI Brochure.
- mm to m: divide by 1,000.
- m to mm: multiply by 1,000.
Because the factor is an exact integer power of ten, the only rounding is the display rounding to 12 significant digits.
Worked examples from the converter
| Input | Result |
|---|---|
| 1,000 mm | 1 m |
| 2,500 mm | 2.5 m |
| 300 mm | 0.3 m |
| 1,234,567.891 mm | 1,234.567891 m |
| 0.25 mm | 0.00025 m |
| 3.5 m | 3,500 mm |
| 0.0004 m | 0.4 mm |
A 300 mm shelf depth is 0.3 m, which is also 30 cm. A 2,400 mm ceiling is 2.4 m.
Reference table
| Millimeters | Meters |
|---|---|
| 1 mm | 0.001 m |
| 10 mm | 0.01 m |
| 100 mm | 0.1 m |
| 500 mm | 0.5 m |
| 1,000 mm | 1 m |
| 2,000 mm | 2 m |
| 5,000 mm | 5 m |
| 10,000 mm | 10 m |
To shift by eye, move the decimal point three places left for mm to m and three places right for m to mm.
Edge cases and rounding
- Zero returns 0 for both rows.
- Negative, blank or non-numeric input returns the error "Enter a length of zero or more" or "Enter a length value".
- Tiny values. Up to 12 decimals are kept, so 0.0001 mm shows as 0.0000001 m. Below that, for example 0.0000000001 mm, the meter value is 1e-13 and displays as 0.
- Large values. Numbers are limited to 12 significant digits, so 1e22 mm shows as 10,000,000,000,000,000,000 m with the trailing digits already zero.
- Decimal input. Floating-point noise such as 1234.5678910000001 is cleaned first, which is why 1,234,567.891 mm gives a tidy 1,234.567891 m.
Mixing with inches, centimeters and volumes
A common slip is dividing by 100 instead of 1,000 when going from mm to m. Centimeters sit in between: 1 cm = 10 mm = 0.01 m. For inches, 1 inch is exactly 25.4 mm (the 1959 international yard and pound agreement), so 1,000 mm is 1000 / 25.4 = 39.3700787 inches, not 3 feet. Use mm to inches or cm to mm for those. Area and volume do not scale by 1,000: 1 m2 is 1,000,000 mm2 and 1 m3 is 1,000,000,000 mm3. Related: km to meters, feet to meters.

FAQ
How many millimeters are in a meter?
Exactly 1,000. The prefix milli means one thousandth, so 1 mm = 0.001 m.
How do I convert 2,500 mm to m by hand?
Divide by 1,000 or move the decimal three places left: 2,500 mm = 2.5 m. For m to mm, move it three places right: 3.5 m = 3,500 mm.
Why does a very small value show as 0?
The converter keeps up to 12 decimal places. A meter value smaller than 0.0000000000005 rounds to 0. Convert such tiny lengths to micrometers or nanometers instead.
What input is rejected?
Blank, negative and non-numeric values return an error. Zero is accepted and gives 0 in both rows.
Is the result rounded?
Only for display. The number is first cleaned to 12 significant digits, then shown with at most 12 decimals and trailing zeros removed.
Does the factor 1,000 apply to square or cubic units?
No. Square units use 1,000,000 (10^6) and cubic units use 1,000,000,000 (10^9), because the factor is squared or cubed.
How do centimeters fit in?
1 cm = 10 mm = 0.01 m. A 300 mm length is 30 cm and 0.3 m.
