SHA-512 Hash Generator

Enter any text to compute its SHA-512 hash instantly. This sha512 hash generator processes everything locally in your browser, so your data is never sent to a server. SHA-512 produces a 512-bit (64-byte) digest, typically shown as 128 hexadecimal characters, and is part of the SHA-2 family standardized by NIST.

How to use the sha-512 hash generator

  1. Enter or paste the text you want to hash into the input area.
  2. The SHA-512 digest appears automatically as you type.
  3. Copy the 128-character hexadecimal result for use in your application.

How SHA-512 works

SHA-512 is a member of the SHA-2 family defined in FIPS 180-4. It processes input in 1024-bit (128-byte) blocks and maintains eight 64-bit state variables initialized to specific constants derived from the fractional parts of the square roots of the first eight primes.

The algorithm pads the message by appending a single 1 bit, then enough 0 bits so the length is congruent to 896 modulo 1024, and finally appends the original message length as a 128-bit big-endian integer. Each block goes through 80 rounds of mixing using bitwise operations, modular addition, and rotation on 64-bit words.

For example, hashing the three-character string abc yields the well-known test vector: ddaf35a193617aba.... Because SHA-512 uses 64-bit arithmetic throughout, it provides a larger internal state than SHA-256, making it better suited for 64-bit processors.

If your output does not match these prefixes, there is likely an error in padding or byte ordering.

When to choose SHA-512

SHA-512 produces a 512-bit digest, offering 256 bits of collision resistance. This makes it suitable for digital signatures, certificate validation, and integrity verification where long-term security matters.

Compared to older algorithms like MD5 or SHA-1, SHA-512 has no known practical collision attacks. It also outperforms SHA-256 on 64-bit hardware because its internal operations use native 64-bit word sizes rather than requiring two 32-bit operations per step.

For password storage, however, a raw SHA-512 hash is not sufficient on its own. Use a key derivation function such as PBKDF2, bcrypt, or Argon2 that adds salting and deliberate computational cost. If you need to verify an existing hash against a file, a hash checker can compare digests side by side.

Implementation details and BigInt

JavaScript numbers are IEEE 754 double-precision floats, which only represent integers exactly up to 253. Since SHA-512 requires precise 64-bit unsigned integer arithmetic including right shifts and rotations, standard number types cannot be used without losing bits.

This sha512 hash generator uses the BigInt type introduced in ES2020. Every addition is masked with 0xFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFn to simulate 64-bit overflow. Right rotations combine a right shift and a left shift: (x >> n) | (x << (64n - n)), all operating on BigInt values.

The TextEncoder API converts input strings to UTF-8 byte arrays before processing, ensuring that multibyte characters like accented letters or emoji are hashed correctly according to their byte representation rather than their code point value.

Identifying hash formats

A SHA-512 hash always appears as exactly 128 hexadecimal characters (using digits 0-9 and letters a-f). If you encounter a hash of unknown origin and need to determine its algorithm, a hash identifier can analyze the length and character set to suggest candidates.

Do not confuse SHA-512 with SHA-3 (Keccak), which can also produce 512-bit outputs but uses an entirely different sponge construction internally. The two are not interchangeable despite sharing similar output lengths.

FAQ

Is this sha512 hash generator secure for sensitive data?

Your text stays private: all computation happens locally in your browser using JavaScript, and nothing is transmitted to a server. A raw SHA-512 digest is still not a safe way to store passwords.

What is the difference between SHA-512 and SHA-256?

SHA-512 uses 64-bit words and 80 rounds, producing a 512-bit hash. SHA-256 uses 32-bit words and 64 rounds, producing a 256-bit hash. SHA-512 is generally faster on 64-bit processors.

Can I hash files with this tool?

This tool accepts text input. To hash large files, you would typically use a command-line utility or a dedicated file hashing application that reads binary streams.

Why does my hash not match another tool?

Ensure both tools use the same character encoding. This sha512 hash generator encodes text as UTF-8 before hashing. Differences in line endings (CRLF vs LF) also change the resulting hash.

Is SHA-512 suitable for storing passwords?

Not by itself. While SHA-512 is cryptographically strong, it is designed to be fast. Password hashing requires slow, salted algorithms like bcrypt, scrypt, or Argon2 to resist brute-force attacks.

How long is a SHA-512 hash?

A SHA-512 hash is 512 bits, which is represented as 128 hexadecimal characters or 64 raw bytes.
