- Enter your gross pay for one pay period and choose how often you are paid.
- Choose your filing status as it appears on your W-4 (Step 1c).
- Add pre-tax items: 401(k) deferrals and health premiums per period.
- Use your W-4 steps (two jobs box, credits, other income, deductions, extra withholding) if you filled them in.
- Read the net pay and the line-by-line deductions for this check.
Tennessee and the end of the Hall tax
Tennessee never taxed wages. Its income tax, the Hall Income Tax, applied only to interest from bonds and notes and to stock dividends. The Tennessee Department of Revenue says the rate stepped down from 4% in 2017 to 3%, 2% and 1%, and that the tax was repealed for tax periods beginning on or after January 1, 2021. A Tennessee employee therefore sees no state income tax line. This tennessee paycheck calculator applies the rules for 2026.
A weekly Tennessee paycheck, step by step
$1,100 a week is $57,200 a year. Taking federal wages of $1,100, the engine annualises to $57,200, subtracts the $8,600 W-4 Step 1(g) amount and applies the IRS 2026 single schedule, then divides by 52: federal withholding is $90.08. Social Security is $68.20 and Medicare $15.95. State tax: $0.00. Net pay is $925.77, or $48,140.04 a year.
Why the weekly pay frequency matters
Weekly pay is common in Tennessee hospitality, healthcare and logistics. Withholding is annualised, so the engine multiplies one weekly check by 52, applies the 2026 Publication 15-T tables and divides the result back by 52. For the example that annualises to $57,200 and gives $90.08 of federal withholding on $1,100.
Hourly and tipped workers
Weekly pay is common in Tennessee's hospitality, healthcare and logistics sectors. Convert hours to gross first: 38 hours at $28.95 is about $1,100. Overtime and tips count as wages for withholding. If your hours change each week, run the typical week and a heavy week to see the range; because withholding is annualised, a larger check is taxed at a higher implied rate.
Checking the result against your pay stub
Match the three tax lines first. A federal difference of a few dollars usually means a different W-4 (Steps 2 to 4), a different filing status on file, or an employer using the wage bracket tables. A Social Security or Medicare difference often means a pre-tax health premium or a year-to-date wage figure left at zero. Tennessee adds no state tax line, so any other deduction on the stub is a benefit, garnishment or union item.
Method and sources
Federal withholding follows IRS Publication 15-T (2026) Worksheet 1A for the federal figure and IRS Publication 15 (2026) for the Social Security wage base of $184,500, the 1.45% Medicare rate and the 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax over $200,000. Tennessee: Tennessee Department of Revenue help center articles (read in full) HIT-3 (Hall Income Tax Repealed Beginning January 2021) and HIT-4 (Hall Income Tax Rate): the rate fell one point a year from 2017 to 1% in 2020, and repeal for tax periods beginning January 1, 2021. The shared engine is covered by hand-worked Publication 15-T cases in the test suite (for example $2,700 a period, single, biweekly: $254.38). Estimate only, not tax advice. For flat-percentage modelling use the paycheck calculator, or convert wages with the hourly to salary calculator.

FAQ
Does Tennessee have a state income tax?
Not on wages. The Hall Income Tax on interest and dividends was repealed for tax periods beginning January 1, 2021.
Why does my Tennessee pay stub still show tax?
Federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare are withheld in every state.
Is there a local income tax in Memphis or Nashville?
No local income tax on wages is withheld by this calculator, and Tennessee has no state income tax on wages either.
How do I enter weekly overtime?
Add the overtime pay to the gross field for that week. Withholding rises by your marginal rate on the extra amount.
Does a 401(k) deferral reduce my Tennessee tax?
It reduces federal income tax only, since there is no state wage tax to reduce.
What was the Hall income tax?
A tax on interest from bonds and notes and on stock dividends, never on wages. It was phased down to 1% for 2020 and repealed from 2021.
