How to use the utc to edt converter
- Pick the Direction: UTC to Eastern Time or Eastern Time to UTC.
- Enter the year, month and day, then the hour (0 to 23) and minute.
- Read the converted time, the offset in effect and whether the date is standard or daylight saving time.
How UTC to Eastern Time works
Eastern Time is UTC-5 during standard time (EST) and UTC-4 during daylight saving time (EDT). To convert UTC to Eastern Daylight Time you subtract 4 hours, but only while EDT is in effect. A UTC value of 18:30 on July 15, 2026 is EDT, so the Eastern reading is 18:30 - 4 = 14:30, or 2:30 PM EDT. A UTC value of 09:00 on January 10, 2026 is EST, so the Eastern reading is 09:00 - 5 = 04:00, or 4:00 AM EST.
That second example is why a UTC to EDT time converter needs a date check. EDT only runs from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, roughly 34 weeks of the year. This page reads the browser's built-in time zone database (Intl.DateTimeFormat with the America/New_York zone) and prints a warning whenever your date falls in EST, so you do not label a winter time as EDT by mistake.
EDT vs EST: when the warning appears
EDT (Eastern Daylight Time) is the summer name and EST (Eastern Standard Time) the winter name for the same zone, which covers New York, Florida, Georgia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Virginia and the Carolinas, and cities like New York, Miami, Atlanta, Boston and Toronto. People often open a UTC to EDT converter in January because a system, calendar or colleague said "EDT". If your date is in winter the zone is on EST, and subtracting 4 hours gives a time that is one hour too late.
When the date you enter is in EST, the result shows the EST reading and a warning note. When it is in EDT, the Time type row says so and the result is exactly UTC minus 4 hours. Either way, the UTC to EDT converter gives you the real wall-clock time that people in New York were reading.
Daylight saving dates for 2025 to 2027
US daylight saving time starts at 2:00 AM local time on the second Sunday in March and ends at 2:00 AM local time on the first Sunday in November. The table lists the exact change for the Eastern zone with the UTC moment it happens. These are the dates the converter uses and the ones that trip up logs and scheduled jobs.
| Year | Clocks spring forward | Clocks fall back |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | March 9, 07:00 UTC (2:00 AM EST becomes 3:00 AM EDT) | November 2, 06:00 UTC (2:00 AM EDT becomes 1:00 AM EST) |
| 2026 | March 8, 07:00 UTC (2:00 AM EST becomes 3:00 AM EDT) | November 1, 06:00 UTC (2:00 AM EDT becomes 1:00 AM EST) |
| 2027 | March 14, 07:00 UTC (2:00 AM EST becomes 3:00 AM EDT) | November 7, 06:00 UTC (2:00 AM EDT becomes 1:00 AM EST) |
On the spring-forward date the hour from 2:00 AM to 2:59 AM never exists on the local clock. On the fall-back date the hour from 1:00 AM to 1:59 AM happens twice. See the section on gaps and repeated hours below for how this converter reports those times.
Quick reference: UTC to Eastern Time
Use this table for a fast lookup. The middle column is the winter offset and the right column is the summer offset. Check the date first, because the table cannot tell you which season applies.
| UTC time | EST (UTC-5) | EDT (UTC-4) |
|---|---|---|
| 00:00 | 19:00 (previous day) | 20:00 (previous day) |
| 03:00 | 22:00 (previous day) | 23:00 (previous day) |
| 06:00 | 01:00 | 02:00 |
| 09:00 | 04:00 | 05:00 |
| 12:00 | 07:00 | 08:00 |
| 15:00 | 10:00 | 11:00 |
| 18:00 | 13:00 | 14:00 |
| 21:00 | 16:00 | 17:00 |
Converting Eastern Time back to UTC
An EDT to UTC converter works the other way: add 4 hours while EDT is in effect and 5 hours in EST. For example, 2:30 PM EDT on July 15, 2026 is 14:30 local plus 4 hours, which is 18:30 UTC. If you want an "edt to utc converter", choose Eastern Time to UTC in the Direction box above.
The reverse direction has two special cases that the forward direction does not. On the spring-forward date, wall-clock times between 2:00 AM and 2:59 AM do not exist, so the tool reports an error instead of guessing. On the fall-back date, times between 1:00 AM and 1:59 AM exist twice, so the tool shows both UTC instants, one for the daylight reading and one for the standard reading. Anything else converts to a single UTC time.
Common mistakes and edge cases
Server logs, API responses and database timestamps are usually stored in UTC, while teams in New York, Atlanta and Miami work in Eastern Time. A UTC to EDT time converter helps when you match a market-hours event to a log line, schedule a release, or confirm what time a UTC-based job fired for an Eastern Time user.
- Using a fixed offset for the whole year instead of checking the date.
- Treating the abbreviation as the zone: "EST" in a July timestamp is usually a loose label, not a real offset.
- Forgetting that the date may change: 02:00 UTC is the previous calendar day in the US.
- Converting a local time on the spring-forward or fall-back night without noting the gap or repeated hour.
- Mixing up the two names: EST is winter and EDT is summer.

FAQ
What is the difference between EDT and EST?
EDT is Eastern Daylight Time (UTC-4), used from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November. EST is Eastern Standard Time (UTC-5), used the rest of the year. The tool tells you which applies.
How do I convert UTC to EDT?
With this UTC to EDT converter, subtract 4 hours when the date is in daylight saving time. If the date is in winter, Eastern Time is on EST and you subtract 5 hours, which the converter shows with a warning.
Why does the page warn me about EST?
Because EDT is not in effect on every date. If you enter a winter date, the result is the EST reading and a note explains that an EDT label would be one hour off.
How do I use the edt to utc converter direction?
Set the Direction box to Eastern Time to UTC and enter the local date and time. The tool adds 4 hours in EDT and 5 hours in EST, and flags times that do not exist or happen twice on change days.
Is a UTC to EDT time converter the same as UTC to New York time?
Only in summer. New York is on EDT from March to November and on EST the rest of the year, so the date decides the offset.
Does this page send my times anywhere?
No. The conversion runs in your browser with the built-in Intl time zone data, so nothing is uploaded.
