How to read USD to MXN

USD to MXN is the number of MXN (Mexican Peso) that 1 USD (US Dollar) buys.

The European Central Bank publishes its reference rates against the euro, so USD to MXN is a cross rate, derived from the two published figures for USD and MXN. The rate for this pair is (MXN per EUR) ÷ (USD per EUR).

Who converts USD to MXN

Dollars to Mexican pesos is a pair with heavy everyday use: tourists heading to Mexican beach towns and cities, residents of border regions, businesses that trade across the border and families receiving money from relatives in the United States. Mexico is one of the biggest recipients of remittances in the world, which makes the exchange rate a household matter for many people.

Facts about this pair

  • USD is ISO 4217 code 840 and MXN is code 484; the three letter codes are what the converter and the ECB use to tell currencies apart.
  • Both currencies are written with 2 decimal places in ISO 4217, so a result in MXN is rounded to 2 decimal places.
  • The reverse pair is the reciprocal: the MXN to USD rate is 1 divided by the USD to MXN rate, apart from rounding.

Many tourist businesses in Mexico accept dollars at a conversion rate they set themselves, and it is rarely generous. A little arithmetic helps: convert your pesos to dollars with this page before paying, and you will see right away whether the posted dollar price is fair.

It is the most widely held reserve currency, and many commodities, including crude oil, are priced in it. The peso sign is the same $ symbol as the US dollar, so the code MXN is the safe way to avoid confusion.

Getting a fair rate on USD to MXN

In tourist areas, shops often quote prices in both dollars and pesos with their own conversion. Check that rate against the one on this page before paying in dollars, and consider paying in pesos with a card that has no foreign transaction fee.

In Mexico, when an ATM or card terminal asks whether to charge you in dollars or pesos, choose pesos, because the dollar option uses the machine owner's own conversion. Withdrawing from an ATM attached to a bank branch is generally a safer choice than a stand-alone machine, and exchange booths on the street vary widely. Carry small notes for taxis, markets and tips, and use this page to sense-check any quoted conversion.

The peso sign is the same as the dollar sign, so a price marked with $ in Mexico is usually in pesos, not dollars. Look for the code MXN or MN to be sure.

Where the rate comes from

The rate loads in your browser from Frankfurter, which republishes European Central Bank reference rates. They are published on working days for information only, and a bank is not obliged to deal at them. If the service cannot be reached the page shows no number, except a rate saved in your browser within six hours, marked as cached. How the rates work is explained on the currency pairs page. Nothing here is financial advice.

FAQ

Is a $ price in Mexico in pesos or dollars?

Usually pesos. Many tourist businesses also list dollar prices, and they often add the letters USD or MXN to make clear which is meant. If it is unclear, ask.

Why do I get fewer pesos at exchange counters?

Counters add a spread to the mid-market rate and sometimes a commission. This page shows the reference rate with neither, so counter results are lower.

How often does the rate update?

The ECB publishes it once on each working day. The date of the rate is shown in the converter.

Can I convert pesos to dollars?

Yes. Use the swap button and enter the peso amount to see the dollar value at the same reference rate.
