How to use the business days calculator
- Select Count workdays between dates or Add business days to a date from the mode dropdown.
- Enter a start date in
YYYY-MM-DDformat, such as2025-01-06. - For counting, enter an end date. For adding, enter the number of business days to add.
- Optionally check Include start date if the first day should count toward the total.
- List any holidays in the text area, one
YYYY-MM-DDdate per line, to exclude them from the result.
How the working days calculation works
A working days calculator must skip Saturdays, Sundays and any listed holidays. When counting workdays between dates, the tool walks through each calendar day after the start date up to and including the end date. If the day falls on Monday through Friday and is not in the holiday list, it adds one to the tally.
For example, from Monday 2025-01-06 to Friday 2025-01-10 without the start date included: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are all weekdays, giving 4 business days. If you include the start date, Monday counts too, making it 5.
When you add business days, the logic starts at the given date and advances one calendar day at a time. Each weekday that is not a holiday reduces the remaining count by one. The loop stops when the counter reaches zero, landing on the target end date.
Reference table: common business day spans
The table below shows how many workdays fall within typical periods starting on a Monday, assuming no holidays. Use it as a quick sanity check alongside the business days calculator.
| Period | Calendar days | Business days |
|---|---|---|
| 1 week | 7 | 5 |
| 2 weeks | 14 | 10 |
| 1 month (30 days) | 30 | 21 or 22 |
| 3 months (90 days) | 90 | 64 or 65 |
| 1 year (365 days) | 365 | 261 or 262 |
The exact monthly and yearly figures depend on which day of the week the period starts on and whether it is a leap year.
Practical uses for a workdays between dates count
Project managers use workdays between dates to set realistic deadlines. If a task requires 15 business days and starts on March 3, the calculator shows the delivery date accounts for weekends automatically.
Human resources teams rely on a working days calculator to compute paid leave balances. An employee taking five days off might actually be away for seven calendar days if a weekend falls in the middle.
Legal and compliance departments often have response windows defined in business days rather than calendar days. Missing a deadline because a holiday was overlooked can have real consequences, so listing those holidays in the tool matters.
Freelancers billing by the day also benefit. Knowing exactly how many billable weekdays exist in a month helps produce accurate invoices without manual counting.
Handling holidays and edge cases
Holidays vary by country, state and even company. This tool does not assume a specific holiday calendar. Instead, you provide the exact dates to exclude in the holidays field. Enter each date as YYYY-MM-DD, one per line.
If a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, it has no effect on the business day count because weekends are already excluded. You only need to list holidays that land on weekdays.
Another edge case is the start date itself. By default the calculator does not count the start date when measuring the span between two dates. Checking the Include start date box changes this behavior, which is useful when the first day is a full working day.
When adding zero business days, the result is simply the start date unchanged, regardless of whether it is a weekend or holiday.
Why use a browser-based calculator
Many online tools require you to submit dates to a server. This business days calculator processes everything locally using JavaScript. Your dates and holiday lists never leave your device.
Because it relies on standard date arithmetic rather than external APIs, it works offline once the page is loaded. The underlying math uses UTC timestamps internally to avoid issues with local time zone shifts and daylight saving transitions that could otherwise miscount a day.
For other date-related tasks, you might also find the date calculator useful for general calendar math, or the timestamp converter when working with Unix epochs.

Each result below was produced by the same code the tool runs, so you can check your own numbers against them.

FAQ
What counts as a business day?
A business day is any day from Monday through Friday that is not a public holiday or a company-specific day off. Saturdays and Sundays are always excluded.
Does the calculator include the start date?
By default it does not. Check the Include start date option if you want the first day counted as part of the total when it falls on a weekday.
How do I add holidays?
Type each holiday in YYYY-MM-DD format in the Holidays text area, one date per line. Those dates will be skipped during the count or addition.
Can I use this working days calculator for any country?
Yes. Because you supply your own holiday list, it works for any country or organization regardless of local public holidays.
What happens if the start date is a weekend?
When counting, the weekend start date is simply not counted. When adding business days, the tool skips forward past the weekend before it begins counting down the days to add.
Is there a limit to how many days I can add?
The tool accepts up to 10,000 business days. Adding more than that would span roughly 38 years, which covers nearly all practical scheduling needs.
Are the results affected by my time zone?
No. The calculator parses dates as UTC internally, so shifting time zones or daylight saving changes will not alter the day count.
