What a 10-second click speed test measures
The test counts every press of the button inside the box between your first click and the end of the timer, then divides by ten. 62 clicks, for instance, is 6.20 per second, or 372 per minute. Ten seconds is long enough to smooth out one lucky burst and short enough that your hand does not tire. Looking for the multi-duration CPS test? Clicks per second versus clicks per minute
Clicks per minute (CPM) is simply clicks per second multiplied by 60. It is the same speed in a bigger number, handy for auto-clicker settings and for comparing with sources that quote CPM. A run of 62 clicks in 10 seconds is not a sustained 372 CPM: it is a 10-second rate scaled up, and most people slow down over a full minute.
| Clicks per minute | Same speed per second | In 10 seconds |
|---|---|---|
| Under 240 | Under 4 | Under 40 clicks |
| 240 to under 420 | 4 to under 7 | 40 to under 70 clicks |
| 420 to under 540 | 7 to under 9 | 70 to under 90 clicks |
| 540 to under 720 | 9 to under 12 | 90 to under 120 clicks |
| 720 to under 960 | 12 to under 16 | 120 to under 160 clicks |
| 960 or more | 16 or more | 160 or more clicks |
These bands are a rough guide, not an official scale. Casual clicking is commonly reported at roughly 4 to 7 clicks per second.
Mouse versus trackpad versus touch screen
The same hand gives different numbers on different devices. This is a general guide, not a measurement: individual devices vary a lot.
| Device | Strengths | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Mouse | Short, firm button travel and a stable hand position. The usual choice for click tests. | Worn or cheap switches, and mice that ignore a quick second press. |
| Trackpad, physical click | Familiar on laptops. | The click usually needs more force and travel than a mouse, so scores tend to be lower. |
| Trackpad, tap to click | No button travel at all, so fast tapping is possible. | Light taps can be missed, and palm contact can add stray clicks. Settings differ by system. |
| Touch screen | Tapping needs no pointer movement. | Touch sampling and tap handling vary by phone, and multiple fingers count as separate taps. |
Whatever you use, test on the same device each time if you want to see progress. Switching from a mouse to a trackpad changes the measurement, not just the score.
Double-click and drag-click explained
A double-click is two presses in quick succession. Your operating system treats them as one double-click action if they land within its double-click interval (500 milliseconds is the default on Windows) and close together on screen. This test does not care about that: each press is counted as its own click, so a double-click adds two.
Drag-clicking means dragging a finger across the surface of the mouse button so friction produces a rapid series of presses. It can reach high numbers in a short burst, but it is hard to control, it puts extra wear on the switch, and some communities do not allow it, so check the rules where you plan to use it. The test counts what the browser reports and does not judge the technique.
Hardware notes: polling rate and debounce
- Polling rate is how often the mouse reports to the computer. At 125 Hz that is every 8 milliseconds; at 1,000 Hz it is every millisecond. Higher rates give finer timing but rarely change a ten-second total.
- Debounce is a short delay in the mouse firmware that ignores electrical chatter after a press. It is typically a few milliseconds, and some gaming mice let you adjust it. Very fast clicking against a long debounce can drop presses.
- Switch type matters for feel: lighter switches with shorter travel are easier to repeat quickly.
- Browser timing. Browsers may round their timers slightly for privacy. That affects timing by a fraction of a millisecond, not your score in any meaningful way.
How to click faster and more steadily
- Rest your hand and keep it relaxed. Tension slows you and makes scores swing between attempts.
- Click with a light, short motion from the finger rather than the whole wrist.
- Warm up with one or two practice runs, then record the next few.
- Keep the pointer still. Moving it out of the box does not stop the test, but clicks outside the box are not counted.
- Take breaks. Repeating many maximum-effort runs tires the hand and can cause strain. Stop if anything hurts.
- Use the average of several runs rather than your single best. The best is saved, but the typical value tells you more.
Why your clicks may not all count
Clicks that land after the timer ends are ignored, and so are right-button presses in the left-click setting. If you press the button faster than the mouse or system can report, some presses are never delivered to the page. The test can only count events the browser receives. If you switch tabs mid-test, the run is cancelled because a hidden page cannot be timed fairly. Everything runs locally in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
FAQ
How is the click speed test scored?
Clicks counted in the box divided by 10 gives clicks per second. Multiply by 60 for clicks per minute.
What is a good click speed?
Roughly 4 to 7 clicks per second is commonly reported for casual clicking. Higher scores usually come from practice or special technique.
Is clicks per minute the same as CPS?
It is the same speed in different units: CPM = CPS x 60. A score of 6 CPS is 360 CPM.
Why is my trackpad score lower than my mouse score?
Physical trackpad clicks need more force and travel. Tap to click can be faster but may miss light taps.
Does a gaming mouse make me click faster?
It can help if your old mouse drops fast presses or has stiff switches, but it will not change your own finger speed much.
Does a double-click count as two clicks?
Yes. Each button press is counted separately, whatever the operating system does with it.
Can I change the test length?
Yes, the length buttons run from 1 to 60 seconds. For a side-by-side comparison across lengths, use the CPS test page linked above.
Are my scores stored?
Only in your own browser, as a best score per length and input. Nothing is sent to a server, and Clear saved bests deletes it.
