How to convert seconds to hours
- Divide the seconds by 3,600 (the number of seconds in an hour). The whole number part is the hours.
- Take the remainder and divide it by 60. The whole number is the minutes.
- What is left over is the seconds. Write the three parts as h min s or as HH:MM:SS.
- For decimal hours, skip the remainders and just divide the total by 3,600.
Here is the working for 10,000 seconds, produced by the same code the converter uses:
10,000 / 3,600 = 2 h, remainder 2,800 s2,800 / 60 = 46 min, remainder 40 sResult: 2 h 46 min 40 s (02:46:40)Decimal hours: 10,000 / 3,600 = 2.777778 h
So 10,000 seconds is 2 hours 46 minutes 40 seconds, or about 2.78 hours. Note that 2.78 hours is not 2 hours 78 minutes: the decimal part is a fraction of an hour, so 0.78 × 60 is roughly 46.7 minutes. Mixing up the two is the most common mistake on timesheets.
Converting hours, minutes and seconds back to seconds
Multiply hours by 3,600 and minutes by 60, then add everything: 1 h 23 min 20 s = 1 × 3,600 + 23 × 60 + 20 = 5,000 seconds. The reverse panel accepts several ways of writing a duration:
1:23:20: hours, minutes and seconds. Hours can be any size, so100:00:00works.23:20: minutes and seconds, the way video players show length.2:01:23:20: days, hours, minutes and seconds.1h 23m 20s,1 hour 23 minutes,90 min,2.5hor1w 2d.- Separate hours, minutes and seconds boxes, where values above 59 are fine: 0 h 90 min is 5,400 seconds.
Use Use as seconds input to send the result to the left panel and see every other unit.
What each result means
- h min s: the readable form, skipping zero parts. 3,600 seconds shows as simply 1 h.
- HH:MM:SS: the clock-style form used in spreadsheets, video editors and logs. Hours keep counting past 24, so 90,000 seconds is 25:00:00 rather than wrapping to the next day.
- Decimal hours: total seconds divided by 3,600, the value payroll and billing systems usually want.
- Days + h:m:s: splits off whole days first, handy for uptime figures and long render jobs.
- Minutes, days and weeks: the total expressed in a single unit.
Decimals are allowed, for example 90.5 seconds is 00:01:30.5, and values up to one trillion seconds (about 31,700 years) are supported. Negative values are rejected with a message because a duration cannot be less than zero.

A few worth remembering: 3,600 seconds is an hour, 86,400 seconds is a day, 604,800 seconds is a week, and one million seconds is about 11.6 days.
Where you need this
- Programming and logs. APIs, cache headers (
max-age=86400), cron timeouts and job runtimes are usually given in seconds. - Video and audio. Editors and YouTube analytics report watch time in seconds or minutes.
- Timesheets and billing. Time trackers export seconds; invoices need decimal hours.
- Fitness and running. Turn a total like 2,730 seconds into 45 min 30 s, then into a pace.
- Spreadsheets. In Excel or Google Sheets, divide seconds by 86,400 and format the cell as
[h]:mm:ssso hours do not reset after 24.
Working with Unix time instead of durations? The Timestamp Converter turns epoch seconds into dates, and the Date Calculator counts the days between two dates.
FAQ
How many seconds are in an hour?
3,600. An hour has 60 minutes and each minute has 60 seconds, so 60 × 60 = 3,600.
How do I convert seconds to hours in Excel?
For decimal hours use =A1/3600. For a clock-style result use =A1/86400 and format the cell as [h]:mm:ss. The square brackets let hours go past 24.

What is 1.5 hours in seconds?
5,400 seconds. Decimal hours multiply directly: 1.5 × 3,600 = 5,400. Type 1.5h in the reverse panel to check.
