CMYK to Pantone Converter: Find the Nearest PMS Match

Enter cyan, magenta, yellow and black percentages to convert CMYK to Pantone Matching System solid coated numbers. The tool computes the sRGB equivalent, then finds the nearest PMS color using CIE76 deltaE so the match reflects how humans perceive color differences. It runs entirely in your browser with nothing uploaded.

How to use the cmyk to pantone converter

  1. Enter the Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black percentages (0 to 100). All four fields are required, so type 0 for none.
  2. The tool converts your CMYK input to sRGB using the standard screen approximation formula.
  3. It calculates the CIELAB coordinates of the resulting RGB color under a D65 illuminant.
  4. The CIE76 deltaE is computed between your color and every Pantone solid coated swatch to find the smallest perceptual difference.
  5. Review the nearest PMS match, its hex code, the deltaE value, and two alternate suggestions.

How CMYK is converted to sRGB

The conversion from CMYK to Pantone starts by translating ink percentages into screen RGB values. This tool uses the common naive formula rather than an ICC press profile:

R = 255 x (1 - C/100) x (1 - K/100)
G = 255 x (1 - M/100) x (1 - K/100)
B = 255 x (1 - Y/100) x (1 - K/100)

For example, a CMYK value of 0, 93, 81, 9 yields R = 255 x 1 x 0.91 = 232.05, G = 255 x 0.07 x 0.91 = 16.24 and B = 255 x 0.19 x 0.91 = 44.09. This produces the sRGB color (232, 16, 44), which is within a deltaE of 0.51 of the screen value for Pantone 185 C. Real print CMYK depends on the specific press profile, paper stock and ink set, so this formula is a screen approximation.

Why CIE76 deltaE matters for color matching

Simple RGB distance treats all channels equally, but human vision is more sensitive to green than blue. To convert CMYK to PMS accurately, this tool maps both colors into the CIELAB color space and measures the Euclidean distance there, known as CIE76 deltaE.

The process linearizes the sRGB values by removing gamma compression, converts them to CIEXYZ using the D65 reference white point, and finally transforms XYZ to CIELAB. The deltaE formula is:

deltaE = sqrt((L1-L2)^2 + (a1-a2)^2 + (b1-b2)^2)

A deltaE below 1.0 means the colors are virtually indistinguishable on screen. Values under 3.0 are very close, under 6.0 are close, and anything beyond that is approximate.

Common CMYK to Pantone reference values

The table below lists CMYK inputs and the Pantone solid coated number this tool returns for them, with the CIE76 deltaE of the match. Each CMYK set is the naive-formula equivalent of the swatch hex, so these results are a round trip through the same dataset.

CMYK inputNearest PMS CSwatch hexdeltaE

100, 0, 48, 28354#00b7601.08
0, 28, 92, 11235#fcb5140.60

Typical CMYK builds from a Pantone guide often differ from these, for example 0, 93, 82, 0 is nearer PMS 1788 here. Your design software may suggest other percentages based on its own color engine, so treat the tool as a screen-based estimate.

Screen approximations versus physical guides

The Pantone values returned by this converter are screen approximations of PMS solid coated colors, not official Pantone values. Monitors emit light using red, green and blue subpixels, while Pantone spot inks are mixed physically and printed on paper. A color that looks correct on your display may shift noticeably when printed.

For any professional print work, always verify your selection against a physical Pantone guide under controlled lighting. If you already have a hex code instead of CMYK percentages, the hex to Pantone tool performs the same perceptual matching directly from a six-digit code. You can also explore conversions from RGB to Pantone or look up specific swatches with the Pantone color finder.

Working with the Pantone Matching System

The Pantone Matching System (PMS) assigns unique numbers to standardized ink formulations. Solid coated (often written as PMS C) refers to colors printed on coated paper stock, which produces vibrant, sharp results compared to uncoated paper.

When you convert CMYK to Pantone, you are mapping a four-ink process color to a single premixed spot color. This is useful for brand consistency because spot colors do not vary between print runs the way CMYK halftones can. However, not every CMYK combination has a perfect spot color equivalent. Some bright cyans, oranges and metallics fall outside the CMYK gamut entirely, which is why designers specify PMS numbers from the start rather than trying to reverse-engineer them after the fact.

FAQ

How does this CMYK to Pantone converter work?

It converts your CMYK percentages to sRGB using the standard screen formula, maps the result into CIELAB color space, and compares it against an embedded dataset of Pantone solid coated colors using CIE76 deltaE to find the smallest perceptual difference.

Are the Pantone matches exact?

They are screen approximations. Monitors display colors differently than printed ink. Always verify critical matches with a physical Pantone solid coated guide before sending files to press.

What does the deltaE number mean?

DeltaE measures perceptual color distance. A value under 1.0 is an exact visual match on screen, under 3.0 is very close, under 6.0 is close, and higher values indicate an approximate match where visible differences exist.

Can I use this for uncoated Pantone colors?

This tool only includes Pantone solid coated (PMS C) references. Uncoated colors absorb ink differently and appear duller, so they require a separate dataset and physical guide.

Is my color data sent to a server?

No. The entire conversion runs locally in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored anywhere.

Why do my CMYK values differ from other converters?

Different tools use different ICC profiles or rounding methods. This tool uses the widely adopted naive formula for screen approximation. Professional prepress software applies device-specific profiles that yield different numbers.

Is this official Pantone data?
