How to use the pantone to cmyk converter
- Enter a PMS number (for example 185 or PMS 185 C) in the input field.
- The tool looks up the sRGB value from its built-in dataset of 907 solid coated references.
- It converts the RGB channels to CMYK using the standard naive formula and rounds each channel to a whole percent.
- Review the C, M, Y, K values and the HEX code, then check the two alternate swatches, each with its CIE76 deltaE and closeness label.
How the conversion works
The pantone to cmyk process starts with an sRGB triplet looked up from the embedded dataset. Each channel is first normalized to a 0-1 range: R' = R / 255, G' = G / 255, B' = B / 255. The black key (K) is calculated as K = 1 - max(R', G', B'). Then cyan, magenta and yellow are derived:
- C = (1 - R' - K) / (1 - K)
- M = (1 - G' - K) / (1 - K)
- Y = (1 - B' - K) / (1 - K)
For PMS 185 (#e8112d), R=232, G=17, B=45. R'=0.9098, G'=0.0667, B'=0.1765. K = 1 - 0.9098 = 0.0902. C = (1 - 0.9098 - 0.0902) / 0.9098 = 0. M = (1 - 0.0667 - 0.0902) / 0.9098 = 0.927. Y = (1 - 0.1765 - 0.0902) / 0.9098 = 0.806. Rounded to whole percents: C=0%, M=93%, Y=81%, K=9%.
CIE76 deltaE and color matching
Alongside the CMYK values, this pantone cmyk converter finds the two other swatches in the dataset that look most similar to your color. Both colors are converted from sRGB to CIELAB (using the D65 illuminant), then the Euclidean distance in LAB space is computed: deltaE = sqrt((L1-L2)^2 + (a1-a2)^2 + (b1-b2)^2). Each alternate is labeled exact (under 1), very close (under 3), close (under 6) or approximate (6 and above). If the number is not in the dataset you get an error naming the two nearest PMS numbers by value. If you need to go the other direction, use the CMYK to Pantone tool.
Common PMS to CMYK reference values
The table below shows approximate conversions for frequently used solid coated numbers. These are screen-derived estimates, not press-ready proofs.

| 100 | #f4ed7c | 0% | 3% | 49% | 4% |
| 185 | #e8112d | 0% | 93% | 81% | 9% |
| 300 | #0072c6 | 100% | 42% | 0% | 22% |
| 354 | #00b760 | 100% | 0% | 48% | 28% |

Screen approximations vs. physical guides
The values produced by this pms to cmyk tool are mathematical screen approximations of solid coated references. They are not official Pantone values. Monitors display light additively in sRGB, while offset printing uses subtractive CMYK inks on paper. A color that looks vibrant on screen may appear duller or shift in hue when printed. For any professional print work, always verify against a physical Pantone Solid Coated guide under controlled lighting conditions. Do not rely solely on digital conversions for brand-critical production jobs.

When to use this converter
Designers often need a quick pantone color to cmyk estimate when setting up a file for a printer who does not support spot colors, or when mocking up a layout digitally before ordering ink. It is also useful for web developers translating a brand style guide into CSS fallbacks. If you have a hex code and need the PMS number instead, try the hex to Pantone converter. To look up a specific swatch visually, use the Pantone color finder.

FAQ
Is this pantone to cmyk conversion exact?
No. The CMYK values are calculated from sRGB using a standard formula. They are screen approximations, not official press values. Pantone is a trademark of Pantone LLC and this site is not affiliated with or endorsed by Pantone LLC. The values are screen approximations of the PMS solid coated library (907 colors), not official Pantone data.
What does the deltaE value mean?
DeltaE measures the perceptual difference between two colors in CIELAB space. In the alternates list it shows how far each similar swatch is from your PMS color. A value under 1 is generally imperceptible to the human eye, while higher numbers indicate a more noticeable difference.
Can I use these CMYK values for professional printing?
Use them as a starting point only. Professional printing requires proofing with actual inks on the target paper stock, as screen conversions cannot account for dot gain, paper white or ink density.
Does this tool include uncoated Pantone numbers?
No. The dataset contains only Pantone Matching System solid coated (PMS C) numbers. Uncoated references have different visual properties and require separate conversion tables.
Why do the CMYK totals sometimes exceed 100%?
In the naive conversion formula, C, M, Y and K are independent channels. Their sum can exceed 100% because they represent separate ink coverages, not fractions of a single whole.
Is my data sent to a server?
No. The entire conversion runs locally in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or transmitted.
