Dog Age Calculator: Convert Dog Years to Human Years

Enter your dog's age and select its size category to see the equivalent age in human years. This dog age calculator uses the American Veterinary Medical Association formula, which accounts for the fact that smaller dogs mature faster but age more slowly than larger breeds. It runs entirely in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.

Medium dogs add 5 human years per dog year after age 2.

How to use the dog age calculator

  1. Enter your dog's age in whole years.
  2. Select the breed size category: small, medium, large or giant.
  3. Read the equivalent human age in the result panel.
  4. Compare across sizes to see how breed weight affects aging.

How the calculation works

The old rule of multiplying by seven is inaccurate because dogs do not age at a constant rate. The American Veterinary Medical Association provides a more precise model. Every dog reaches roughly 15 human years by age one and 24 human years by age two, regardless of size. After year two, each additional dog year adds a fixed number of human years that depends on the breed's adult weight.

The formula for any dog aged two or older is:

human_age = 24 + (dog_age - 2) x annual_rate

For example, a 5-year-old large dog uses an annual rate of 7: 24 + (5 - 2) x 7 = 45 human years. A 10-year-old giant dog uses a rate of 7 as well: 24 + (10 - 2) x 7 = 80 human years. Small dogs use a lower rate, reflecting their longer lifespans.

Annual aging rates by breed size

The table below shows how many human years each additional dog year represents after the second birthday.

Breed sizeWeight rangeHuman years per dog year (after age 2)
SmallUp to 20 lb (9 kg)4
Medium21 to 50 lb (10 to 23 kg)5
Large51 to 100 lb (24 to 45 kg)7
GiantOver 100 lb (45 kg)7

Small dogs add only four human years per calendar year, while large and giant breeds add seven. That gap widens significantly over a decade.

By age 15, a large or giant breed dog has reached the equivalent of 115 human years, while a small dog is closer to 76.

Why breed size matters

Among mammals, larger species usually live longer than smaller ones. Dogs are the exception. A Great Dane typically lives 7 to 10 years, while a Chihuahua often reaches 15 to 20. Researchers believe rapid growth in large puppies places stress on cells and accelerates biological aging. This is why a dog age calculator must account for size rather than applying a single multiplier.

Mixed-breed dogs can be harder to classify. If you know your dog's adult weight, use the corresponding category. When in doubt, choose the next size up, as mixed breeds with large-dog ancestry tend to follow the faster aging curve.

Practical uses for knowing your dog's human age

Veterinarians use life-stage equivalents to schedule screenings. A medium dog at 7 human-equivalent years of about 49 is entering middle age and may benefit from baseline blood work. By the time that same dog reaches 11 (roughly 69 in human years), senior care protocols like joint supplements and dental checks become important.

Understanding your dog's stage also helps set exercise expectations. A 2-year-old large dog is physically similar to a 24-year-old person and needs vigorous activity. A 10-year-old small dog, equivalent to 56, may prefer shorter walks. If you have a feline companion, you can use the cat age calculator to compare their life stages side by side.

FAQ

Is the multiply-by-seven rule accurate?

No. Dogs mature very quickly in their first two years, reaching the equivalent of 24 human years by age two. After that, the rate depends on breed size, ranging from 4 to 7 human years per dog year.

What if I do not know my dog's exact age?

A veterinarian can estimate age by examining teeth, eye clarity and muscle tone. Once you have an estimate, enter it into the dog age calculator to get the human equivalent.

Do mixed breeds age differently?

Mixed breeds generally follow the aging curve of their dominant size category. Use your dog's adult weight to pick the closest match: small, medium, large or giant.

At what age is a dog considered a senior?

Small dogs are typically seniors around 11 years (about 60 in human years). Large and giant breeds reach senior status earlier, around 7 to 8 years (roughly 50 to 60 in human years).

Why do giant dogs age so much faster?

Rapid skeletal and cellular growth in giant breeds creates oxidative stress that shortens their lifespan. Their annual aging rate after year two is nearly double that of small breeds.

Can I use this for puppies under one year?

This tool accepts whole years starting at zero. For puppies under 12 months, consult your vet, as development in the first year is not linear.
