How to use the new york paycheck calculator
- Enter gross pay for one check and pick the pay frequency.
- Pick the marital status and exemptions from your IT-2104.
- Say whether you live in New York City. That adds the city resident tax.
- Add 401(k) and health premiums per check, then any federal W-4 entries.
- Read net pay, with state tax, city tax, SDI and Paid Family Leave on separate lines.
Up to four New York lines on one stub
A New York paycheck can carry four state-level deductions: state income tax, New York City resident income tax if you live in the city, a small disability insurance (SDI) charge and the Paid Family Leave (PFL) contribution. On a $2,800 biweekly check with a $140 401(k) deferral and one exemption, this new york paycheck calculator shows $119.84 of state tax, $12.10 of Paid Family Leave and $1.20 of SDI, so take-home pay is $2,067.08 outside the city. A city resident also pays $91.15 of New York City tax and takes home $1,975.93. For other states, see the general paycheck calculator.
The Method II exact calculation
- Subtract the combined deduction and exemption allowance for your pay period from the wage. For a single employee that is $7,400 a year plus $1,000 per exemption; for a married employee $7,950 plus $1,000 per exemption, scaled to the pay period in the booklet's Table A.
- Find the row of the period table where the net wage falls.
- Subtract the row's column 3 amount, multiply by its rate, and add its column 5 amount.
The annual schedule starts at 3.9% and climbs through ten bands for single (twelve for married). Two bands are higher than the ones next to them: 11.44% for single wages from $215,400 to $265,400 and 13.49% for married wages from $323,200 to $373,200. From $1,077,550 for single and $2,155,350 for married, one flat rate applies to all the net wages: 10.45%, then 11.10% from $5 million and 11.70% from $25 million.
New York City is a separate table
If you live in the city, the state publishes a second set of tables with its own deduction ($5,000 single, $5,500 married), the same $1,000 per exemption and rates of 2.05% to 4.25%. The tables are for employees who live in the city. Choosing "yes" above adds that line: $91.15 on the example check. Yonkers and other local taxes are not modelled.
SDI and Paid Family Leave
Disability insurance is charged at 0.5% of wages up to $0.60 a week, which is the most an employer may charge an employee for it without a separate agreement, so it is a small line: $1.20 on a biweekly check. Paid Family Leave is 0.432% of wages for 2026, up from 0.388%, up to a maximum of $411.91 for the year, which is reached at $95,349.77 of wages. Both are modelled on gross pay, before 401(k) deferrals, and how section 125 premiums count for these two lines is an assumption. This page assumes the employer deducts the full statutory maximum from the employee.
Worked example from the state booklet
The New York booklet works a weekly wage of $400 for a single employee with three exemptions. The Table A allowance is $200.05, which leaves $199.95. That falls in the second row: $199.95 less $163 is $36.95, times 4.40% is $1.63, plus $6.38 is $8.01. Enter that check above (weekly, $400, single, three exemptions) and the New York line reads $8.01, the same figure. The booklet's other examples agree to the cent or within one cent, because its printed rows round some amounts.
Method and sources
State rule: New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, NYS-50-T-NYS (1/26) "New York State Withholding Tax Tables and Methods", effective January 1 to December 31, 2026 (Method II exact calculation and Method III top income tax rates), and NYS-50-T-NYC (1/26) for the New York City resident tables. The annual schedules match USDA National Finance Center bulletin NFC-26-1772477134, which also excludes 401(k) deferrals. Paid Family Leave: New York Department of Financial Services 2026 rate decision, 0.432% with a $411.91 annual maximum. SDI: Workers' Compensation Board form DB-820.1, one-half of one percent of wages or $0.60 a week. Federal income tax follows IRS Publication 15-T (2026), Worksheet 1A, annual percentage method. Social Security is 6.2% up to the $184,500 wage base and Medicare is 1.45% plus 0.9% over $200,000 of wages. The period tables are rebuilt from the annual schedule with the booklet's rounding, and the repository's automated tests include the booklet's printed examples. SDI and Paid Family Leave are modelled on gross pay, so how section 125 premiums count for those two lines is an assumption here. On a $2,800 biweekly check, SDI is $1.20 and Paid Family Leave is $12.10. The booklet notes weekly net wages of $600 or less may use a dollar-to-dollar table instead, which can differ by cents. What it leaves out: Yonkers tax, nonresident rules, IT-2104 extra withholding and the dollar-to-dollar tables. This is a withholding estimate for one paycheck, not a payroll quote or tax advice. Your employer's payroll system and your final tax return decide the real figures. Constants to refresh each January: both schedules, allowances, SDI and PFL rates, Social Security wage base.

Does this include New York City tax?
Yes if you choose that you live in New York City. It uses the state's 2026 city resident tables. Yonkers and other local taxes are not included.
What is an IT-2104 exemption worth?
$1,000 of annual wages, built into the allowance table for your pay frequency.
Is my 401(k) deferral taxed by New York withholding?
