Random Date Generator: Pick Dates in a Custom Range

This random date generator produces one or more dates between a start and end date you choose. It works well as a random birthday generator or for creating sample data, and it runs entirely in your browser without uploading anything.

How to use the random date generator

  1. Enter a start date and end date using the YYYY-MM-DD format.
  2. Set the How many field to the number of dates you need (up to 100).
  3. Pick an output format: ISO, US, European or long form.
  4. Click Generate to produce your list of random dates.

How the random date generator picks a day

The random date generator converts both the start and end dates into day counts measured from a fixed reference point (the Unix epoch, 1 January 1970). It then picks a whole number at random between those two counts, inclusive, and converts that number back into a calendar date.

For example, if the range is 1 January 2024 to 3 January 2024, the day counts are 19723, 19724 and 19725. The tool picks one of those three integers with equal probability and formats it. Because the math operates on integer days, every valid calendar date in the range has exactly the same chance of appearing, including 29 February in leap years.

Using it as a random birthday generator

A common use for this tool is generating random birthdays for mock databases, game characters or classroom exercises. To do this, set the start date to roughly 80 years ago and the end date to today. A range like 1945-01-01 to 2006-12-31 covers most living age groups.

If you need only adults, narrow the end date so that no generated birthday falls less than 18 years before today. Pair the output with a random name picker to build complete placeholder profiles quickly.

Date format reference

Different regions and systems expect different date strings. Here is how each format option renders the same calendar day (4 July 2024):

Format namePatternExample
ISO 8601YYYY-MM-DD2024-07-04
USMM/DD/YYYY07/04/2024
EuropeanDD/MM/YYYY04/07/2024
LongMonth DD, YYYYJuly 04, 2024

ISO 8601 is the safest choice for databases and APIs because it sorts correctly as text. The US and European formats are familiar in everyday writing but can cause confusion when shared internationally since the day and month positions swap.

Common mistakes with date ranges

Entering dates in the wrong order is the most frequent error. The start date must be earlier than or equal to the end date; otherwise the tool returns an error rather than guessing what you meant.

Another issue is mixing up month and day positions when typing the input. This tool requires YYYY-MM-DD for the start and end fields regardless of which output format you select. Typing 01/15/2024 instead of 2024-01-15 will fail validation.

Finally, remember that very large ranges (for instance, year 0001 to year 9999) work mathematically but may produce dates far outside any practical context. Keep the range tight enough to match your actual use case.

Other tools for building test data

Dates are only one piece of sample data. Depending on what you are building, you might also need:

Combining these outputs lets you assemble realistic-looking records without relying on real personal information.

FAQ

Are the generated dates truly random?

They use the browser's cryptographic random number source (crypto.getRandomValues), which provides high-quality randomness suitable for games, testing and sampling. For cryptographic security protocols, always follow domain-specific standards.

Can I generate just one random date?

Yes. Set the "How many" field to 1 and click Generate. You will get a single date string in your chosen format.

Does this work as a random birthday generator?

It does. Set the start date to around 80 years ago and the end date to 18 years ago to produce birthdays that correspond to living adults.

Why do I have to type the input dates as YYYY-MM-DD?

The ISO 8601 format removes ambiguity between months and days. The output format selector lets you display results in US, European or long form, but inputs stay consistent to prevent errors.

Are leap years handled correctly?

Yes. The calculation works with exact day counts from the Unix epoch, so 29 February appears in the correct proportion whenever the range includes a leap year.

Is my data sent to a server?

No. Everything runs locally in your browser. No dates or settings are uploaded anywhere.
