How to use the sentence counter

  1. Paste or type your text into the input area above.
  2. The sentence counter updates instantly as you type.
  3. Review the sentence count, word count and average sentence length in the results.
  4. Edit your text to see how changes affect the totals.

How the sentence counter works

The tool scans your text for sentence-ending punctuation marks: periods, question marks and exclamation points. Consecutive marks like ... or ?! are treated as a single boundary rather than multiple sentences. If your text contains words but no ending punctuation at all, the counter treats the entire block as one sentence.

For example, the text Hello world. How are you? Fine! contains three terminal marks, so the sentence count is 3. The word count is 6, giving an average of 6 / 3 = 2 words per sentence.

Handling abbreviations and edge cases

A naive approach would count every period as a new sentence, which breaks on common abbreviations. This sentence counter uses a heuristic list of known abbreviations such as Mr., Mrs., Dr., Prof., Sr., Jr., St., Ave., Blvd., vs., etc., e.g., i.e., approx., dept., est., govt., inc., ltd., co., Jan. through Dec. and others. When a period follows one of these abbreviations, it is not counted as a sentence boundary unless it is followed by another uppercase letter that starts a new clause.

Ellipses (...) and repeated punctuation (!!!) are collapsed into a single boundary. Numbers with decimal points like 3.14 do not trigger a false count because the digit after the period prevents a sentence split.

Why average sentence length matters

Average sentence length is a key readability metric. Most style guides recommend keeping sentences between 15 and 20 words for general audiences. Shorter sentences improve clarity in technical writing, while longer ones can suit narrative prose.

Avg words/sentenceReading level
Under 10Very easy, suitable for young readers
10 to 15Easy, conversational tone
15 to 20Standard, good for most audiences
20 to 25Fairly difficult, academic or formal
Over 25Hard, consider breaking up long sentences

Use this sentence counter to check whether your draft stays within your target range.

Practical use cases

Writers and editors use a sentence count to enforce style guide limits. For instance, some publishers require paragraphs to contain no more than five sentences. Students can verify essay structure before submission.

Developers working with natural language processing often need to segment text into sentences before tokenization. Knowing the exact sentence count helps validate preprocessing pipelines. Social media managers may also check sentence density to keep posts punchy and readable.

FAQ

What counts as a sentence?

A sentence is a group of words ending with a period, question mark or exclamation point. Text with words but no terminal punctuation is counted as a single sentence.

Does this sentence counter handle abbreviations like Mr. or Dr.?

Yes. Common abbreviations are recognized so their periods do not create false sentence boundaries. The heuristic covers titles, months and standard Latin abbreviations.

How are ellipses handled?

Consecutive dots such as an ellipsis are treated as one punctuation boundary, not three separate sentences. The same applies to repeated question marks or exclamation points.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. All counting happens locally in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored.

Can I count sentences in a very long document?

Yes. The tool processes text of any length instantly. However, extremely large texts may be limited by your browser's clipboard or textarea capacity.

What is a good average sentence length?

For general readability, aim for 15 to 20 words per sentence. Technical and academic writing sometimes averages higher, but shorter sentences are easier to follow.
