Ship Name Generator: Blend Two Names Into One

Enter two names and this ship name generator combines them into portmanteau couple ship names using several blending strategies. It runs entirely in your browser, so nothing is uploaded or stored. Use it for fan fiction pairings, social media handles, or just for fun with friends.

  5. Pick the portmanteau that sounds best for your couple.

How the blending works

A portmanteau merges parts of two words into a single new word. This ship name generator applies five distinct algorithms to each pair you enter, then shuffles the results.

  • Front and back: The first half of name one plus the second half of name two. For Brad and Angelina, the midpoint of Brad (length 4) is index 2, giving Br, and the midpoint of Angelina (length 8) is index 4, giving lina. Combined: Brlina.
  • Vowel pivot: Everything before the first vowel in name one plus everything from the first vowel onward in name two. Brad gives Br, Angelina gives angelina, producing Brangelina.
  • Consonant pivot: Everything up to the last consonant cluster in name one plus the tail of name two.
  • Alternating chunks: Letters alternate between the two names in small groups.
  • Simple concatenation: Both orders joined directly, like Bradangelina and Angelinabrad.

After generating all variants, duplicates are removed and the list is randomized so each click feels fresh.

What makes a good ship name

The best couple ship names share three traits: they are easy to pronounce, they clearly reference both people, and they sound like a real word rather than a random string of letters. Brangelina works because it flows naturally and you can hear both Brad and Angelina inside it. Bennifer (Ben and Jennifer) follows the same pattern.

Short names often need simple concatenation. Tom and Kat become Tomkat, which is punchy and recognizable. Longer names benefit from the vowel pivot method, which trims syllables to keep the result under ten characters. If a generated name has too many consonants in a row, skip it and pick another from the list.

Where people use ship names

Fan communities invented shipping culture, but the practice has spread well beyond fiction. Here are common places where a blended name is useful:

  • Fan fiction and fandoms: Tagging stories on archive sites so readers can find specific character pairings quickly.
  • Social media hashtags: Celebrities and influencers often get a combined hashtag when fans support their relationship.
  • Gaming and streaming: Co-op duos use a shared handle built from both player names.
  • Creative projects: Podcasters, YouTubers, or writers collaborating under a joint brand might blend their names instead of picking something unrelated. Tools like the podcast name generator help when you want a full show title instead.

Other naming tools

This ship name generator focuses strictly on combining two existing names. If you need something different, Xerobit has dedicated tools for other naming tasks:

Each tool uses its own logic, so you can combine them. Generate two fantasy names first, then bring them here to create the ship name for your story's central romance.

Handling special characters and long names

The algorithm strips spaces and non-letter characters before blending, so hyphenated names like Mary-Kate are treated as Marykate. Accented characters such as e with an acute accent are preserved if your browser supports them, but for maximum compatibility across platforms, stick to standard Latin letters.

Very long names (over fifteen characters each) can produce unwieldy results. The generator still processes them, but the front-and-back and vowel-pivot methods tend to work better than simple concatenation for lengthy inputs. If both names exceed twenty characters, consider using nicknames or shortened forms to get cleaner portmanteaus.

FAQ

What is a ship name?

A ship name is a portmanteau created by blending two people's names together. Fans use it to refer to a romantic pairing, whether fictional or real.

Does this tool upload my names anywhere?

No. The ship name generator runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server or saved in a database.

Why do I get different results each time I click Generate?

The tool creates all possible blends using several algorithms, removes duplicates, and then randomly shuffles the list. Each click gives you a new order.

Can I use this for more than two names?

This tool is designed for exactly two names. To blend three people, generate a ship name for the first two, then run that result against the third name.

Do the names have to be real people?

Not at all. You can enter any two strings: character names, usernames, pet names, or even regular words you want to mash together.

What if the output sounds strange?

Not every combination produces a natural-sounding word. Click Generate again to shuffle, or try entering shorter nicknames to give the algorithms better material to work with.
