Sod Area Calculator: Lawn Size, Rolls and Pallets

Enter the dimensions of your lawn sections to compute the total square footage, then see exactly how many sod rolls or pallets to order. This sod area calculator handles rectangles, circles and triangles together, applies a waste allowance for cuts and curves, and runs entirely in your browser so nothing is uploaded.

How to use the sod area calculator

  1. Enter the length and width of each rectangular section of your lawn, or set the count to zero if you have none.
  2. Add any circular or triangular areas by setting their count and entering the radius or base and height.
  3. Set your sod roll size in square feet and the number of rolls that come on a pallet.
  4. Adjust the waste allowance percentage to account for trimming around edges, garden beds and curved borders.
  5. Read the results to see your total lawn area, the adjusted area with waste, and the exact number of sod rolls and pallets to order.

How the sod area is calculated

The sod area calculator adds up every shape you enter using standard geometry formulas. Rectangles use length x width, circles use π x radius² and triangles use base x height / 2. The individual areas are summed to produce the total lawn area.

For example, a yard with one 40 x 25 ft rectangle and one triangular corner measuring 10 ft by 8 ft gives:

  • Rectangle: 40 x 25 = 1,000 sq ft
  • Triangle: 10 x 8 / 2 = 40 sq ft
  • Total: 1,040 sq ft

The waste allowance is then applied as a multiplier. At 10 percent waste the adjusted area becomes 1,040 x 1.10 = 1,144 sq ft. Dividing by the coverage of a single sod roll (say 10 sq ft) gives 114.4, which rounds up to 115 rolls.

Standard sod roll and pallet sizes

Sod is sold in small rolls for homeowners and large slabs or pallets for commercial jobs. Knowing the coverage per unit lets this turf calculator convert your square footage into an order quantity.

Sod formatTypical dimensionsCoverage per piece
Small roll2 ft x 4.5 ft9 sq ft
Standard roll2 ft x 5 ft10 sq ft
Large roll2.5 ft x 6 ft15 sq ft
Slab (Southern US)16 in x 24 in2.67 sq ft
Pallet (standard rolls)50 rolls at 10 sq ft500 sq ft
Pallet (large rolls)70 rolls at 15 sq ft1,050 sq ft

Always confirm the exact dimensions with your supplier, because grass type and regional practices change the roll size. Enter the precise coverage per roll into the calculator for an accurate count.

Why you need a waste allowance

A perfectly rectangular lawn with no obstacles would need zero extra sod, but real yards rarely look like that. You lose material when cutting around tree rings, garden beds, fences, utility boxes and curved pathways. The waste allowance covers these offcuts.

As a rule of thumb, use 5 percent for simple rectangular lots, 10 percent for typical suburban yards with a few beds, and 15 percent or more for irregular shapes with many curves. Ordering too little means a second delivery fee and a visible seam between batches installed days apart. Ordering slightly too much is cheaper than running short.

Breaking complex lawns into simple shapes

Most lawns are not perfect rectangles. The trick is to divide the space into smaller shapes that the sod area calculator can handle. Sketch your yard on paper or measure it with a tape wheel, then draw lines to split it into rectangles, circles and triangles.

If you have an L-shaped yard, treat it as two rectangles. A semicircular patio border can be entered as half a circle by calculating its area manually and adding it as a rectangle of equivalent size. For multiple identical shapes, such as three flower bed cutouts, enter the count as 3 and provide the radius once. The calculator multiplies automatically.

When subtracting areas you do not want sodded, such as a concrete driveway, calculate the driveway separately and reduce your rectangle count or dimensions accordingly before entering values.

Tips for ordering and installing sod

Once you know how many rolls or pallets to order, schedule delivery for the day you plan to install. Sod is perishable and should be laid within 24 hours of harvest, especially in warm weather. Have the site graded, raked smooth and lightly watered before the truck arrives.

Lay the first row along a straight edge such as a driveway or sidewalk. Stagger the seams like brickwork so joints do not line up, which prevents water channels and makes the lawn stronger. Use a sharp knife or spade to trim edges. Roll the finished lawn with a light roller to press roots into the soil, then water deeply immediately after installation.

FAQ

How do I calculate how much sod I need?

Measure the length and width of each section of your lawn, multiply them to get the area in square feet, add all sections together, then increase the total by 5 to 15 percent for waste. Divide that number by the square footage of one sod roll to find how many rolls to buy.

How many square feet does a pallet of sod cover?

A standard pallet holds about 50 rolls at 10 square feet each, covering 500 square feet. Some suppliers stack 70 larger rolls per pallet for up to 1,050 square feet. Check with your local sod farm for exact numbers.

What waste percentage should I use for sod?

Use 5 percent for a simple rectangle, 10 percent for a typical yard with a few curves or beds, and 15 percent or more for highly irregular lots. It is better to have a few extra rolls than to run short.

Can I use this sod area calculator for metric measurements?

The calculator works in feet and square feet. If you measured in meters, convert to feet first by multiplying meters by 3.28084, or calculate your area in square meters and convert to square feet by multiplying by 10.7639 before entering the value.

Does the calculator handle circular lawns?

Yes. Enter the radius of the circle and set the circle count. The calculator uses the formula pi times radius squared to find the area. For a semicircle, calculate the full circle area and halve it manually, then enter it as a rectangle of equivalent size.

Is my data sent anywhere when I use this tool?

No. The sod area calculator runs entirely in your browser. Your measurements are never uploaded to a server.
