UTC to MST Converter: UTC to Mountain Time

Enter a UTC date and time to get Mountain Time, with MST or MDT chosen for that date. This utc to mst converter runs in your browser, has an Arizona option and converts both ways.

Arizona (except the Navajo Nation) stays on MST all year.

Result

  • UTC Input
    2026-07-15 18:30 UTC
  • Mountain Time
    2026-07-15 12:30 PM MDT
  • Offset in effect
    UTC-6 (MDT)
  • Time type
    Daylight saving time (MDT)

On this date Mountain Time is on MDT (UTC-6), not MST. MST applies from the first Sunday in November to the second Sunday in March.

How to use the utc to mst converter

  1. Pick the Direction: UTC to Mountain Time or Mountain Time to UTC.
  2. Enter the year, month and day, then the hour (0 to 23) and minute.
  3. Choose the Region: Mountain Time with daylight saving, or Arizona on MST all year.
  4. Read the converted time, the offset in effect and whether the date is standard or daylight saving time.

How UTC to Mountain Time works

Mountain Time is UTC-7 during standard time (MST) and UTC-6 during daylight saving time (MDT). To convert UTC to Mountain Time you subtract 7 hours in winter and 6 hours in summer. A UTC value of 18:30 on July 15, 2026 is MDT, so the Mountain reading is 18:30 - 6 = 12:30, or 12:30 PM MDT. A UTC value of 09:00 on January 10, 2026 is MST, so the Mountain reading is 09:00 - 7 = 02:00, or 2:00 AM MST.

A UTC to MST converter that always subtracts 7 hours is only right in winter. This page reads the browser's built-in time zone database (Intl.DateTimeFormat with the America/Denver zone, or America/Phoenix when you pick Arizona) and reports the offset that was actually in force at that instant. If the result ends in MDT, the summer offset of UTC-6 was used.

MST vs MDT and the Arizona exception

MST (Mountain Standard Time) is the winter name and MDT (Mountain Daylight Time) is the summer name. Most of the Mountain zone, including Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Wyoming and Montana, plus parts of Idaho, changes clocks twice a year. Arizona does not. The state (apart from the Navajo Nation) stays on MST at UTC-7 all year, so in summer Phoenix has the same clock time as Pacific Daylight Time and is one hour behind Denver.

Use the Region option above for Phoenix, Tucson and the rest of Arizona. With Denver selected, July converts at UTC-6; with Arizona selected, July converts at UTC-7. Cities in the daylight-saving Mountain zone include Denver, Salt Lake City, Albuquerque and Boise. Getting this one choice wrong is the most common cause of an off-by-one-hour result on a UTC mst converter.

Daylight saving dates for 2025 to 2027

US daylight saving time starts at 2:00 AM local time on the second Sunday in March and ends at 2:00 AM local time on the first Sunday in November. The table lists the exact change for the Mountain zone with the UTC moment it happens. These are the dates the converter uses and the ones that trip up logs and scheduled jobs.

YearClocks spring forwardClocks fall back
2025March 9, 09:00 UTC (2:00 AM MST becomes 3:00 AM MDT)November 2, 08:00 UTC (2:00 AM MDT becomes 1:00 AM MST)
2026March 8, 09:00 UTC (2:00 AM MST becomes 3:00 AM MDT)November 1, 08:00 UTC (2:00 AM MDT becomes 1:00 AM MST)
2027March 14, 09:00 UTC (2:00 AM MST becomes 3:00 AM MDT)November 7, 08:00 UTC (2:00 AM MDT becomes 1:00 AM MST)

On the spring-forward date the hour from 2:00 AM to 2:59 AM never exists on the local clock. On the fall-back date the hour from 1:00 AM to 1:59 AM happens twice. See the section on gaps and repeated hours below for how this converter reports those times.

Quick reference: UTC to Mountain Time

Use this table for a fast lookup. The middle column is the winter offset and the right column is the summer offset. Check the date first, because the table cannot tell you which season applies.

Converting Mountain Time back to UTC

An MST to UTC converter works the other way: add 7 hours in winter and 6 hours in summer. For example, 2:30 PM MDT on July 15, 2026 is 14:30 local plus 6 hours, which is 20:30 UTC. If you searched for "mst to utc converter", choose Mountain Time to UTC in the Direction box above and pick the region.

The reverse direction has two special cases that the forward direction does not. On the spring-forward date, wall-clock times between 2:00 AM and 2:59 AM do not exist, so the tool reports an error instead of guessing. On the fall-back date, times between 1:00 AM and 1:59 AM exist twice, so the tool shows both UTC instants, one for the daylight reading and one for the standard reading. Anything else converts to a single UTC time.

Common mistakes and edge cases

Server logs, calendar APIs and database timestamps are usually stored in UTC, while teams in Denver, Salt Lake City and Phoenix think in Mountain Time. A UTC to Mountain Time converter helps when you line up a deploy window, read an audit log, or confirm what time a UTC-based job actually ran for a Mountain Time user.

  • Using a fixed offset for the whole year instead of checking the date.
  • Treating the abbreviation as the zone: "MST" in a July timestamp is usually a loose label, not a real offset.
  • Forgetting that the date may change: 02:00 UTC is the previous calendar day in the US.
  • Converting a local time on the spring-forward or fall-back night without noting the gap or repeated hour.
  • Assuming Arizona follows Denver: it does not observe daylight saving.

FAQ

What is the difference between MST and MDT?

MST is Mountain Standard Time (UTC-7) used in winter, and MDT is Mountain Daylight Time (UTC-6) used from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November. The tool picks the right one for your date.

How do I convert UTC to Mountain Time?

Subtract 7 hours in standard time and 6 hours in daylight saving time. Enter the UTC date and time above and the converter applies the correct offset.

Does Arizona use daylight saving time?

No. Arizona, except the Navajo Nation, stays on MST at UTC-7 all year. Pick the Arizona region in the form to convert with a fixed UTC-7 offset.

How do I use the mst to utc converter direction?

Set the Direction box to Mountain Time to UTC, choose the region, and enter the local date and time. The tool adds 7 or 6 hours and flags times that do not exist or happen twice on change days.

What is the utc mst converter result for summer?

In Denver or Salt Lake City, summer dates are MDT, so UTC minus 6 hours. In Phoenix, summer dates are still MST, so UTC minus 7 hours.

Does this page send my times anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in your browser with the built-in Intl time zone data, so nothing is uploaded.
