Every Roman numeral is built from these seven letters. Values are added from left to right, unless a smaller symbol comes before a larger one, in which case it is subtracted.

The rules in short

  • Symbols are written from largest to smallest, left to right.
  • I, X, C and M can repeat up to three times in a row; V, L and D never repeat.
  • Subtract by placing a smaller symbol before a larger one, but only I before V or X, X before L or C, and C before D or M.
  • Standard Roman numerals stop at 3999 (MMMCMXCIX), because there is no symbol for 5000 in the standard system.
  • There is no symbol for zero.
